How Do You Determine Production Yr on a Merc??
Model # tells me on a Johnny but how do I do it on a Merc??
Some of the ficsh botes I'm lookin at have black motors an I don't know how to tell??

Gary, generally by serial number. The newer engines (late 1990s-present) will actually specifiy the year right on the serial number decal located on the transom bracket.

The "really" new Mercs now show the actual production date by month and year on the serial number plate. No more "year models" ...just production dates.
The year models of older engines are determined by using a chart to decipher the year from the serial number.
Mercury's website has an expanation for the elimination of year models on their newest engines....good luck trying to make sense out of it!
Many blocks have their production date stamped into the block near the top...right where the crankcase splitline is.

These are older modles. One is claimed to be a '90 150 Mairner and the other has twin 150's supposed to be early '90's but owner is not sure.
I will get serial #'s.

Rick, you crack me up. Looked at one Mako w/a V-6 looper that "ONLY" has 1000hrs on it Too big and too much though.
Have'nt found what I want/can afford w/a white motor.
