Would love to but I doubt any dealership would set me loose in a C-5 Z-06 let alone a new Corvette. Too bad those new Z-06's are so expensive.

Your not gonna get a deal on any Z06.
If you do, better buy it.
C-5 VS C-6
C-5, dollar for dollar the best Corvette ever built.
I think the C-5 rides better. And it's more controllable.
I think most of this is from the longer wheel base of the C-5.
Trunk is bigger on the C-5.
_____________________________________________________________
The C-6 has what I call the Alligator shoe syndrome, you love wearing them, you love people too notice you have them. But after a long day, you can't wait to get the SOB's off your feet.
C-6 is a very quiet car, even the converable (only type Vette I will own)
Is a quiet piece.
_____________________________________________________________
The C-5 was frame and suspension was modified to handle the Z0-6 package.
The C-6 was built around that package.
ZO-6 option is only hard top.
______________________________________________________________
For Flat out speed, bust your back in the seat!
Nothing is close to the Z0-6 in the new C-6's
LS-7 engine is 427 cid. with a mean as hell 6 speed that needs 2 more!
If you look up baddest engine ever! That should be the one!
You cut the trackion control off and you can burn 450.00 dollars worth of tires of the back! And do it in a Hurry!

I never bought a new car before, and really like the 2002 to 2004 Z-06's but for what they are asking for them it does not look like much more for a New Corvette (and for what the used C-6's are bringing thats a no brainer for a new car). I drove a base engine C-5 and I was not really impressed with it.
A new Z-06 is beyond my means by a long shot.

the c6 with the Z-51 package (not much extra $) is pretty much on the same level as a C5 zo6. although the LS2 in the c6 responds to mods a little better and has .3L on the ls1/6. Id say go for the c6.

When buying a car you consider three things
Resale
Resale
Resale
Z to the O to the motha F-in 6

Their is no new Production cars or trucks in this world that are investments!
NONE!
Cars are not investments!
And resale today is never resale of tomorrow!
Case in point! What were SUV's worth 18 months ago!
Look at them now!
And yea you can buy a vehicle, stick it in a garage bring it out 20 years later and get some jack!
But if you would have invested that money in real property you would have done a lot better hands down.
In most cases bank interest alone you would have done better.
Al
Now their are those raw pieces that are NOT STANDARD PRODUCTION that will be.
Probably the only car today that will have value is the Hertz Shelby Mustang that you can only get from Hertz!
Now if it's a success, how many will they build next year?
Then your little plan goes to crap!
Production CARS are not or not investments!“The bitterness of poor quality & service remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten”

Resale is not a question of making money, but of limiting your losses. For example, a Camry will retain a greater percentage of its cost than a Ford 500. So you better like the Ford or better get a deal, if that is your choice.
In my case, my used Miata cost more than my wife's used Focus, but when we're done with each the Miata resale will equalize the lifetime cost.
In the Vette case, the C5 Z06 might cost more than the C6, but if it depreciates slower, than maybe it makes sense to pay more for the C5. I don't know this. Perhaps Edmunds or some such site could predict resale values.
The obvious answer is to buy what you like and can afford.

I personaly would buy a 01 or older Z06 with the 385hp motor due to pricing against the 02 401hp ZO6. You can pick the 2001 C5 Z06's here in cali with less the 50k miles for under $26,000. Spend the coupe grand on the procharger for it and with the stock exhaust and cats you will see over 570 RWHP. Killer suspension and a set of new HRE wheels. My math is showing less then $32K in a 570 RWHP car. I have driven and built a few of these cars for some friends. One of them have over 150,000 miles on the car and it still pulls like a beast. Get some high flow headers and cats, you will see over 600 RWHP. Best dollar to dollar in my book being the new C6 Z06 is over $75k. Just my 2 cents. Or you can buy my 2007 RS4 and kill the Z06 with 4 people in the car and you just went shopping at Sam's club....

The C5 ZO6 typically ran 12.4-12.6 quarters. The standard C6 turns 12.8's. The earlier ZO6, as someone mentioned was hardtop only with limited options. I found my 02 ZO6 on ebay in Feb, 2005, and it's held it's value fairly well. I worried that it would plummet when the new ones came out but hasn't happened yet. It's a nice car and the only real complaints I've had is the seats when on a long drive. They lack "bottom." The "skipshift" is a pain but can be thwarted fairly easy. I still have the original brake pads and the brake dust on the front wheels is HUGE but that'll be fixed with the replacement pads. I don't recall running any other car from a dead stop but from a 60 roll, you just toy with 'em.

Does anyone know what the difference between the 385 hp and the 405 hp C-5 Z-06's was? Looks like a huge difference in value. I was kinda looking to spend only about 35-37K on a car but would go another 5 or so on the right car.
I have never driven either of these cars. My last Corvette was a 93 that I just sold. I still have a 86 project that I was gonna work over but I am more thinking of rather having a newer one.

Charlie, Charlie, Charlie......1986 project car? That thing belongs in the projects. Go drive a C-5 or 6 and you will never think of driving the old ones again. The one Big Al showed looks like a steal!!! Later, Dave

Charlie,
Until last week, the last Corvette I drove was my 71 454 which I sold years ago. My next door neighbor's girl frind has a C6 convertible with the 51 suspension and the drilled rotors etc. It is the LS-2 400 hp version.
He asked me to drive it to check out the way it shifts (six speed). You are in the looking at the numbers stage and that will not give an idea of how fast these cars are. Even in the midrange it would out pull my 454, and it must have twice the cornering force.
I think the 385 or the 405 will have more performance than you can use even on the track. It would take me a bunch of seat time on the track to get that thing up to it's potential if I ever got there.
It's a whole new ball game.
