Running 65 mph and passed by a jon boat.

While fishing with a friend today, we were cruising along at 65 when an aluminum jon boat came screaming buy us. Friends boat would run 72.3 gps with us and load, and he could not catch that jon.

Later we see the jon getting ready to load at the ramp so we stop to check it out. The fool has a deep sided 15ft jon with what he says was a 70SS johnson ported to the hilt, racing flywheel, velocity staks and 210 lbs of compression, running racing fuel. Had a huge chopper style prop. Said it was very slow out of the hole but ran good on top end.

He offered to take me for a ride. I politely said, no way in hell would I get in that thing.

    Hey Keith,

A freind bought one of those about 5 years ago,had a 70 yamaha pumped up,low water pick up,hot foot and all.Caged out drivers area and transom support.Dale weighs 220 and ran 70 from jump street. The race them in the St. Marys River or did.
Personaly I would rather run 130 in a YT than 75 in a John boat.

    Lord help us.

    Cool Redneck race boats

Some years ago we went to a Festival in Lufkin Tx. We took some JP boats for the show. They had a lot of classes there the wildest ones were the Jon boats. They had one class that had pickel forks 16' jon boats with 4cyl. Mercs with stacks on them. 2 guy's would run the boat. One would work the throttle and steer the other was the trim he would run to the front for turning and run to the back for the straights. Wild running I'll bet they were going 80 or more, Loud as hell too.

    HELL YESSSS!

Wish you had some photos of the tin racer.

A buddy of mine (when we were kids) was so crazy and desperate to get out in a hidden pond that he found an old porceline bath tub and put outriggers on it to keep it from tilting over. It worked, till he pulled the drain! Serriously, it did work and that joker fished the hell out of that pond.

    Double dog

When I was a kid I lived in Toledo and they had Unlimited Hydro Races on the river there. Now this is way back when they had piston engines in front of the drivers. Inbetween some of the heats they had a bathtub derby. 10hp on a bath tub and go racing. Was fun to watch. Greg

Ah yes the sleeper. My favorite.
I do some work for a Sea Ray/Tige/Persuit/Allison dealer, whos owner is a hi-per freak. He built himself a 1998 190CB, this boat has a very similar bottom to the old P-22, this is a closed bow boat that is built in Ireland, and looks exactly like the 190 bow rider built this year. Anyhow we installed a 300mpi (350 that had a fuel injection system similar to the 454 and 502 mag), He had a Bravo drive that was shortened 1.5 inches, and we installed CMI headers and a pro charger, all this through the gimbal housing so it really didn't look like or sound like any thing. Any how to make a long story short, this little family cruser runs 87mpg on GPS every damn day, it has whipped more than it's fare share.

    Cool Yo Benkeith

Don't know about the boat you saw but the one that my friend had was a pram style aluminium or flat bow.The bottom has to be cut to keep it from sticking to the water. From the bottom of the bow where the bottom ties in it is cut about 5or 6'back and raked up like4"or so and rewelded so the entery would pack air and keep the wetted suface further back.Damn thing spanks like an SKboat till it gets up to speed and then it just skips along.Pretty Hi tech for a johnboat.

    Lord help us.

Talking Leave it to a Coonass!

I was at Dwayne Roberie's shop in Lafayette. As I was waiting to talk to him (was busy), I walked around the yard looking at the boats.

There was a aluminium boat, about 17 to 18'. It had a Merc V6, light weight cowl, with a jackplate and lower p/u. Didn't have a tiller, but it was an empty hull with a console with a steering wheel and two seats!

Never saw it run, but it looked scarey!!!

    Cool 10hp on a bathtub

That I'd like to see. Wonder how it handled the rough stuff? LOL

One summer that same buddy and I (we were like 12 or so) got bored. We found an old aluminum john boat, and rigged up a lawn mower engine with one of those huge shop fans and made us an air boat out of it. I'd barely move through the water but it was damn sure a lot of fun.

Sooo we're limpin back to the dock at full tilt when i see out of the corner of my eye 2 bluehairs (yep 2 grannies in a canoe with oars passin us)

We were at some DSRA qualifying down near New Orleans a few years ago and this coonass drives out of the swamps in an aluminum flatbottom with a NASTY Merc V6 on the back and he was whooping everyone's asses! He made about a half dozen passes, whooped a bunch of asses, and then headed back to the swamp to run his crawfish baskets. Damnedest thing I ever saw! lol
1990 Shadow bass boat w/ 2.4 200 Merc. Totally resto'd boat and love it!

I got a 15ft tin boat being built now i hope to get it in a couple weeks. I am going to put a 56ci erude on it with a bob's jack plate. i don't know about going 70mph in one. But i figure 50mph should be doable with a stock 56ci.
