2.5 200 water dump configuration what to do?
Ok, My recently purchased motor 92 2.5 200 is getting the once over,it was rebuilt 2 years ago it has aftermarket cast pistons (not weisco) and i have noticed my cooling system routing is different, i need to know what is correct and i want to prevent any future heating and or cold seize problems. I do not run a temp gauge and is primarily used for fishing with occassional 7k runs. (a)The motor has a water dump coming out of the top center of block which feeds my water pressure gauge (b) both heads are jumped with one hose from the t-stat housings and dumped out the cowliing bucket on the left side (c) the poppett is functional and a hose dumps from it out the right side of the cowling bucket. (d) the t-stat housings have nothing in them. (e) a new complete water pump housing top/bottom and internals has just been intalled. when running the motor at idle it is showing 2-3lbs pressure with only the left hose pumping a very strong stream of water, once warmed up after a few minutes and you burp the throttle to about 3k the right hose from the poppett will shoot water as well but only under acceleration or steady running. The main question here is this configuration safe and why are there no stats or washers. I have a set of brand new stats but no seals to put around them, should i install them and if so what should i seal them in the housing with.
Any insight or opinions would be greatly appreciated!

They need at least washers in them for proper restriction. Sounds like it's been modified for extensive high-RPM use. I believe stock config normally routes the poppet water back into the block passage and down the leg, instead of the hi-po two-hose setup.
Thermostats and blocked poppet should run best and build a littel healthy heat for all-round fishin' motor use.'89 Hydrostream Vegas XT, '90 Merc 2.4 Bridgeport PCU EFI

Thanks Pyro,
What should i seal off the t-stats with, the dealer did not have the seals that go around the outer edges of the t-stats. Any ideas that work?

I will look for some links on this subject as there are some really good threads. The short version from what I recall (I am by no means as smart as a lot of the guys one here though)is that if you are running a 2 piece adapter, you should run the poppet and the thermostats. I think the older 2.5's had the 2 piece adapters assuming you have the same mid that came with the powerhead.

Thanks Fish, alot of reading and some very good and confusing information, but basically it boils down to the less restriction the cooler the motor runs. the more restriction the warmer the motor runs and all temps in between. So pretty much everyone is searching for the ultimate in betweem temp..........

With no T-stats or washers most of the water dumps before it goes through the heads. If you have a dump on the popet, and its dumping water, the popet is not functional. With 2-3 lbs. at idle someone most likely modified the water passages in the two piece plate so be careful if you just put all the stock stuff back on the motor. It could end up running way to hot.
