Exclamation 40w motor oil in Power trim motor

I friend of mine suggested switching from regular power trim fluid to 40w or heavier motor oil to correct my trim sagging until I get a new o'ring kit for it. My trim motor works well but it slowly sags.

THE QUESTION: Will using motor oil hurt the trim unit? He claims to having used that for years with no problem.

    Please let me know.

Years ago we used 30 w oil in the power trim

That was in my dad's 1974 115 Merc. The trim pump was in the boat then.

I guess I didn't answer your question though.

Oh well. It kind of makes sense that it would be harder for a heavier oil with more viscosity to sneek throught tiny o-rings. I'm sure that someone will come-up with an answer here soon. Thanks.

40wt. non-det. oil is a little heavy for those little pumps. You will be putting xtra load on your pump and your trim will run slower. Is your leak internal or xternal? I still use non-det 30wt. oil in my trim and have ran as light as 10wt. I've never ran thicker oil but I live in Michigan and I do most of my runnin in cooler weather. My old inline loves breathing cool air. Most pumps will push any type oil, But don't mix them. If you get too heavy or too sticky your pump will labor. Years ago I would run Velocite #6 spindle oil in my trim system. It was 10wt. and as clear as water. The system would leak down slowly but it sure would speed it up when using it.

    30wt oil

I always run 30wt oil in my trim pump. I did in the old inline twin ram pumps and in my single ram V6 pump. Gets hot here so the 30wt works just fine.

    Question How about transmission fluid?

I saw a guy use this before but never tried it myself. I would think it should work fine.

Mike, I run into guys all the time up here that use tranny fluid. I would never use it with my trim system. With the pump in the boat a leak is a bitch and tranny fluid sucks to clean up. Otherwise The guys that use it around here don't have a problem. I don't think I would try that tranny stop leak stuff in a trim system. I had a guy that wanted to try that stuff to see if it would get him though the weekend. He never called back to see if I could fix it. I bet that could screw up those little trim pumps.

I'm going to try that today. I hope it works. Will post about it later.
    Thanks all.

I've even heard of using 5 wt fork oil, (the kind that goes in motorcycle shocks)

I've thought about using a thiner oil to see if it trims quicker. Does it really make that much of a noticeable difference?

The old inline trim system has long thin hoses with small ports everywhere. The thinner oil does speed them up. I don't know about the ones that are built into the transom brackets. Most of those that I see are running tranny fluid. Yep, I know one that was running fork oil with a little seal swell. I never tried that.

    Tranny fluid and Hydrolic oil

You can use Tranny fluid and Hydraulic oil together and you will get max.viscosity and thickness and slickness to stop or slow the leak. Farmers have been using it for years its called Hy-Tran and you can get it from the International dealers or just mix it yourself, Like I do, Hell I put it in my wifes Front wheel drive car, and for my pickup I mix it Tranny and 30# weight Hydraulic Oil together for years in my 4X4!!!!!!!
