How powerful are BB guns really?

I was wondering, I had a possum last night that was real interested in the boston butt I was smoking, so I shot it with a daisy pump air rifle, and all I had was bb's. I knocked it out of the tree I scared it up, but I don't know if I killed it or it was playing possum. I would have figured with pellets I would have been able to kill it, but not bb's.

    Any thoughts?

Good eating with grits and gravy and yes they do play dead you can kick em and they dont move. A bb would have to be a good shot. They are tough. Rick

There was a guy at our church's last wild game dinner that had some possum gumbo, and it was some good stuff.

Them Possum's iz tough critters.....being that dam ugly they need to be...LOl !

Some BB guns can fly a bb close to 1000 feet a second,, that's hooking !

I use some .22 bullets for my "urban critter controler". Aguillar makes a .22 bullet that is shorter than a short, and with no powder, only the primer to propel the small lead. It's quiter than any pellet gun, even quiter than my slingshot. It'll drop a rabbit / parriedog in it's tracks with a head shot out to 30 yards....after that the bullet loses so much power, it's useless. BUt it is not prone to ricochet cuz of the small powder charge.

Use a 22 long rifle for humane kills,a hyper velocity pellet rifle,NOT bb can be used for head shots in the hands of a skilled marksman with the proper pellet.I like a 22CB long in a bolt action rifle NO report and can dispatch small game at close range(head shots).A bb gun usually just pisses off or makes an animal suffer, except small birds-kills em dead. I dont know about the rest of you guys but I an't eatin no possum!!!!!!

Some of the newer hi-po BB guns actually shoot the BB at around 1100fps. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's about the same speed as a bullet coming out of a .22 rifle. I know I sure as hell wouldn't want to get shot with one. I'm sure it would kill small game at close ranges with no problem.

No matter what the velocity a bb is NOT humane it does not have the same characteristics of a pointed/skirted lead pellet for hunting small game.

What do you mean? A pellett doesn't expand like a bullet when it impacts does it?

Theoretically, a pellet expands, since its soft lead, and it is hollow in the center.

As far as it trying to get my food, it doesn't matter to me if its humane or not, as long as it stays away.

I don't think mine hits 1000 fps, probably more like mid 600's or so. I have some of those CB caps, but my ruger won't shoot them, I have to have a bolt gun or a pistol, and even then I would have to be real careful, my stepkids might tell their dad on me.

I guess birdshot and buckshot are not worth shooting in the ol' shotgun Actually, with the velocities of the new air rifles, a pellet WILL expand. RWS and BEEMAN offer quite an array of different pellets. They come in .17, .22, and even .25 caliber. Far from the days of the ol' Crossman 10 pump most of shot as a kid.

You guys are gettin off track ,BB's in a BB gun are NOT lead they do not expand and do not transfer energy properly to create a suffiecent wound chanel for a quick kill.Although lead BB's are offered by a number of manufactures in variying sizes in lead, that is not generally thought of as
BB for a "BB gun". Shoot anything you want with anything you want,it wont bother me.
    Please excuse my spelling

If you are seriously thinking about killing an animal in a "humane" way....you probably need to step up to something bigger than a BB gun....no matter what kind of a projectile you use.

I agree about the "BB gun" but there are "AIRGUNS" that have surpased some firearms(gunpowder) and are quite lethal for boar and deer size game for one shot kills, airguns have been used since before the American revolution as sniper rifles with great succsess.Precharged pnumatics using sabots with 30 caliber rifle slugs 180 grain@1200fps-ouch.

Well some peolpe frown on discharging a firearm in the city limits, much less in a nice upscale community, so you have to resort to other methods, hence the air rifle.

And I gotta say, when it comes to vermin, I am not really concerned about quick clean humane kills. If it is a skunk or poisonous snake, or something with rabies, then I will hammer it with my .45 or something more substantial.

Maybe I need an adult air rifle, I was sure disappointed in this Daisy. When I was a kid, they were all metal, this one is all flimsy plastic, and doesn't seem as powerful.

What I need is a .22 with a silencer. I think I could kill just about anything I needed to with a .22.

check and oil the seals! if they are cracked or dry rotted you will not get full power.also depends on the shot! if you hit a possum or racoon in the hind quarters you'll just piss them off (too much meat) killing with a BB gun requires a dead on shot to vital organs. go for the head or get a bigger gun!
