I have a 4 inch jackplate that i was planning on putting on it and a custom made gas tank that is in the front of the boat (12-15 gallons). any info would help! p.s. this is my first boat

Depends How Fast Ya Want Ta GO~!
Hey There: Depends how fasy ya want ta go. Your should do about 40-44 MPH with the 115. I've got a 78 GT-150 90 Merc & it did 42 at best. I was thinking doing the same but then just went out & bought a 84 Hydrstream Valaro 2.4 Bridgeport which is designed for high speeds. The GTs are designed for under 50 MPH so you would need to do extensive mods for a bigger motor. Check out this site as It shows the Mods ya need to do. www.Carlsonspeed.com . I went though these thoughts with mine & decided to leave it as is & go the Valaro way.
Good Luck

Hi,
I had a while ago ( 15 yrs) a GT-150 set-uped with a 140 OMC stock, a chopper OMC and i was rinning in the upper 60's with a lot of chine walking. I moved up to a OMC 235 V6 and went up to lower 70's with more chine walking but after experience, i was able to manage it ( even though it was still unpredictable.
Now i'm in a Hydrostream Project with a 2L V6 Mariner that, i do believe, has a lot more potential than the GT-150.

Glastron GT150 w OMC 235
Hydrostream Vision with 2.0l 135
Hydrostream HST w 3.0L 225
I know two things that are infinite, the Universe and Human's Stupidity, although I am not sure about the first one.

run of thumb is not to put the tank or any other weighty item in the front. a 115 should put that boat in the 55 mph range. with the tuned exhaust almost 60.
