Classic Allison Photo #6 - Twin Johnson V4 Allison 16

This very interesting 1968 photo depicts a model 16 Allison with twin Johnson V4 race engines. Note lower units/props and offset engine angles. The port engine appears to be mounted at a steeper angle than the starboard engine.

It is hard to say but it looks to me like the whole boat is tilted a bit with the starboard side a little higher than the port side, increasing the illusion

That is a great setup, do they still tilt twins when they are on smaller v-bottoms? The Allison reminds me of the old glastrons and glaspars.

Okay, who knows what those engines are? (the fact that they're in a slight right turn position may make em look like one is different from the other also.

I'm not sure, but I THINK they're GT115's with racing gearcases. I'm pretty weak on the old OMC's, but have a pair of X115 Evinrods that are the same engine if that's what they are. A neighbor has a GT115 that Hank bought new and it's colored just like the pair in the pic.

Actually the Golden Meteor designation referred to the V4's in that model year and not necessarily just to the race versions. I remember skiin' behind an old MFG V bottom that a neighbor had as a kid that had a Golden Meteor on it, and it sho' wasn't a race motor (or boat).

    Twins

This photo was taken at Pauls old shop in town,it looks like Paul in the background. I like the props. I bet those 2 blades would throw a rooster tail a mile high. I had one of these "big16's" and it was lots bigger than the later 16's. I wondered if that wasn't a young Joe Burgess by the boat? He actually ran in the class.
