    Correction

The 20' Sutphen is not based on a Superboat/Challenger hull. The Sutphen is different length, deadrise, keel and strakes. The 20' Sutphen, as all Sutphens were original designs. The 20 Sutphen was designed specifically to compete against the 20' Cigerette.

As a matter of fact your petigree is ass backwards. "Superboats introduced to their line of offshore powerboats the 21-foot Legend in 1978. This power boat was originally built by Challenger in 1976 and 1977." quote from Superboat site.

Activator is not the same hull as a Superboat, Its actually a 22.

    (below right 1979 Superboat line)
The Sutphen 20' has nothing to do with the 21' Challenger molds or design. It is a completely original design by Richie Sutphen.

There were two sets of molds for the original Challenger 21'. John Coen bought one set of molds at Auction..... George Linder kept the good set and we modified them into the 21 Shadow.( new deck, recessed bottom).

The rest of the boats mentioned are pops of the Challenger, Superboat, or Shadow.

    info

SRMCCOY, Thanks for the correction. I've talked to Babby Saccenti before about the 21 Apache. Given their history and stature in the marine business, although surely influenced by the Challenger hull, I think the 21 Apache was an original design also but I'm not 100% sure.

It's very easy to splash a hull and add a few inches in length and freeboard but changing the actual running surface is much more involved and contrary to the concept of splashing a hull. The Challenger/Superboat sits on a relatively wide (several inches) pad keel which runs almost the length of the boat. In my opinion, that is where any comparison should be made when comparing the pedigree of a boat. As an example, a Donzi or Progression has a true vee keel while a Sutphen runs on a variable degree vee with a 2" pad keel at the transom which tapers into a true vee amidship.

It is amazing the influence of the Challenger after all these years.

I beleive the Apache running surface is Challenger, and the rest is differnet.
The Tuff, while based on the Challenger is different. Pad and strakes only ( a lot different ), totally new deck.
