Not sure RR which model you looked at when you were at Nordic but here is there 21' SOB. Lot of freeboard and note the four stringers.

Really killer looking boats. I will have to dig up the pictures of the boat I looked at when at Nordic, I don't recall the model.
The R is bigger, heavier, and has a monster sporty but it will put a beating on the XS and probably hang right with an X depending on the boat. I have owned all 3 and the R is simply an awesome motor. The looks are a lot more polarizing (either you like or you don't). Obviously I like the looks... Good info on the R and 87 octane makes things simple. I'm sure more rough water SOB's will start showing up with R's with props sorted out this year.
I'm hoping these 22' hulls below get a 561 pound "R" bolted on the transom this year and some numbers posted up. 300XS only so far.

I would love to find someone who has actually weighed a 300xs. I have yet to find someone who has hung one on a scale. I have asked on forums and FB, but everyone quotes the decal and published weight, which based on the R and previous gen motors may not be correct. Just interested to see what the actual difference is.
At first the weight difference was noticeable, but I think that’s because the motor wasn’t broke in. After 20-30 hours the acceleration times in the 5-85 test dropped considerably. At first I was averaging 20 seconds to 85 and that was propped to run 95/96 (30p promax). The boat now runs 16 seconds to 85 with a prop that will hit 100 (32promax). Huge difference after getting some hours on the motor. No setup changes.Allison XB21 2+2

Here is 105 with a prop that runs a 19 second 5-85 on the R. It was 28 seconds on the XS. The motor really pulls.

Thanks, I must have skimmed right by Randy's mention of actually putting the scale on the 300XS. Rayzor has some great information as well.
So add around 10lbs for the external oil reservoir and 1 gallon of oil and we end up 36lbs heavier or about 7% heavier. That is 6 gallons of gas weight difference.Allison XB21 2+2

not to derail thread...
why are the trim tabs mounted horizontally on those ski boats as opposed to following bottom contour
I have never seen that before
thanks!

Good info. Here is someone that mounted them the other way on a new Hallett 210 set up for skiing.
It ended up being surprisingly slow with the big 450 dragging that fat gear case (.6" diameter larger than a 300XS) and with the deep engine mount position.
IMO spectacular looking SOB, very wide at 8', plus full bow storage.

Greg, I heard a 24 Tuff went 116 with a single 300XS. Do you know more on that boat?

When you mount them parallel with the bottom of the hull, the entire tab comes in contact with water coming off the bottom More contact = more drag - assuming your tabs contact the water in the full retracted position.
When you mount them parallel with the water, only the outside edge comes in contact with the water when the tabs are slightly down. Less contact area = less drag. One downside is that you're actually twisting the tabs in rough water.
The other theory is that when you're in rough water and the tabs are working hard, with them mounted parallel with the bottom, when you go through a big wave, the tabs give the hull "a wedgie." Wedgies = more drag and thus less speed.
I have the tabs on my Progression 22 mounted parallel to the bottom, but in the full retracted position for maximum speed, they do not contact the water. So I'm not experiencing any loss of performance in calm water. In rough water where I'm actually using the tabs, I'm not worried about some extra drag.1992 Progression 22
