Heres a funny story Al told me.
In '1988 OMC raised the displacement of the V-6 loopers from 2.7 liters to 3.0 liters.
The Merc teams were looking for any way possible to stop him (3 time Champion) so they protested him at one of the races, claiming he was running a non OEM stroker crank to get the additional displacement.
They didnt know the increase was in bore size and used the same, stock crank!
Al said he never got that crank back
One of my favorite Mod VP races he was still fighting starting problems off the dock. They flagged the start and he sat there on the starting dock grinding on the starter!
The rest of the pack was through the first turn before he got it lit.
When he did, he ran them all down but one!
He drove his balls off in I think maybe the greatest race ever.
He caught the leader Rusty Campbell, and in one more lap would have passed him and won outright.
I still have that race on tape.
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

This is the second Christmas for this thread and I am grateful to everybody clicking in here to see what is going on.
There is many reasons for me to do this and here is a few..
I like to save the Evinrude/Johnson racing history in the cyber world and also put my take on it. I also like to support the future of the brand.
Evinrude have been a big part of my life as a race driver, exclusive dealer and my love for the product.
Evinrude today is going pretty strong and hopefully BRP have the means to get it back to the top.
Yes, I know there is a few people beating up on this thread and that makes me even more hungry to make it successful.
The connection with my Face-book page Evinrude - Johnson outboards. Facts, history, racing and future.
is also helping a lot.
We have racers, supporters and racing buddies from all over the world.
I strongly believe competition in everything you do makes everybody better.
According to my lovely wife Carina I spend to much time doing this but she is a very understanding person so it is going to continue.
Again, thanks and please come back as much as possible.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Lars "Lasse" Ström
