300R nonsense thread
I figured this was needed. So instead of clogging up wildmans thread post it all up here.
Will the new Mercury 4 stroke 300 out preform the xs and x 2 strokes?
will there be HP upgrades for it soon?
when will mercury come out with a 350R?
The world may never know!

.
.
a friend asked me what I guess the potential horsepower could be on the new 300R 4.6L V8 outboard motor.
I said there's no guessing, we can calculate the potential horsepower
currently the 400R motor generates 400HP from a supercharged 2.6L engine block
We first need to get the multiplier to determine the HP / Liter (in other words, what is the horsepower per liter)
That formula is
2.6 * M = 400 HP
calculating for M, we get
M = 400 / 2.6
M = 153.846
or in words, MercuryRacing is capable of building 153 horsepower for every supercharged liter of powerhead
so what is the 300R potential for producing maximum supercharged horsepower?
let's calculate again
4.6 * M = X where X is the maximum supercharged horsepower we can squeeze out of the 4.6L powerplant
we already calculated the M (multiplier) that 153, or 153.846 to be exact
thus
4.6 * 153.846 = 707 horsepower
in words it means, if we apply the same supercharging know how of MercuryMarine to their new 4.6L platform, we have a potential horsepower maximum capacity of 707 horsepower
let's detune that a little to make a race engine with 0 warranty of say 650 HP
detune that again to add warranty and we're down to a motor between 550HP and 650 HP
so thats the answer, the 300R when supercharged has the potential to develop 550~650 HP

Following the success of 7 marine. I can see merc doing their own version of gm based 4.8 5.3 and 6.2l engines in outboards like the mc1300 and such inboards.
Only without the mess the ford 5.4l piston melting failure of an engine the Yamaha 300 was.
I also see see more work in the 2.2l and 3.8 or whatever 4 and 6 cylinders verado style
honestly some of this stuff is just to dang heavy for the average boat. My ‘88 50-70hp was 80lbs wet in a 4s I’m looking at 35hp max and 40-60hp will sink the transom.
I think 2 800hp supercharged 8.2l would sell more then 4 300hp in the big boat market but will anyone do it.

I don’t see forced induction in the cards with this package. I think you will see 2 more cylinders before you see a blower on the V8’s. I think if their future was in forced induction the 300R would have been based on the new v6 platform. I’m sure there was a lot of heated discussions when they were planning this platform on NA vs. forced induction.

Mercury didnt have much choice other than develope the 4stroke. Blame it on the EPA, etc.

Didn't anyone tell Evinrude about the EPA. Going 4 stroke was voluntary.
My beef is not 4 stroke, it's weight, which also applies to the gen 2 Etecs
All good motors, just not for those tha worship Colin Chapman

The weight is right on par with the 300xs. Pretty impressive IMO they can build a four stroke that weighs as much as a two stroke.
Im sorry but the 225PM power to weight days are over.

On weight, agreed that the truck motors are now even w/weights of two strokes.
A point though, that is on EPA motors, not our hot rods.
So really, the 4 strokes are still 50 lbs heavy.
On one of the DI 3.3 Fichts I converted back to conventional induction, I weighed and measured the difference.
It dropped 50 lbs.
Im a fan of what I see w/the new V-8 but get the shakes thinking about popping one.
Dual over head cams, 4 valves per, etc.
I remember having beers w/the svc mngr of a large water sports dealer in Fla when the hot rod 4 stroke PWCs first hit the scene.
He said they were already popping and so expensive to repair that owners of 2 yr old skis were scrapping them.I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

Rumor has it the tuner works on the whole engine by isolating protons from neutrons causing them to float with a 7% newtonian charge given only by the new solar powered cels used in the tuning module. These cels are designed to harmonize the light and heat into a gamma pattern that runs a b-spline polynomial through its algorithm for this effect. Green technology is amaze balls, i am humbled in awe of these new tuners
