Yes, but who would have bet that it would be a DeSilva, not a Switzer? Worse yet, who would have bet it wouldn't be powered by Merc?

I think this was on the cover of Powerboat .....

No, its a passed around too many times story that has lost detail and context. The DeSilva brothers did refused to build another because of the fataility with the 3rd DeSilva Wing - which was much different from the 2 that OMC ran.

Not much in Ralph's books about the Wings. Much more about Ralph's reminisces about the racers he knew over the years

I wonder why De Silva chose to offer a wing design so different from the one that was so successful with the OMC motors? I also wonder why those first De Silva wing boats were not raced more than they were?

For basically the same reason all the wings fell out of favor then...progress. Progress in newer, better designs. They sure looked cool though, didn't they?!

OMC originally rejected their Wings. Russ Hill Sr was the genious that finished them and made them into winners - then OMC begged them back.

In my opinion the De Silva runabouts were the best looking flat bottoms ever. Always wanted to drive one. It seems my list of boats I wanted to drive greatly exceeds my list of boats I actually got to drive. That is a subject for another thread.

When I was 15 I got a Holt Craft BU with a really nice 20H on it. My best friend's dad bought him a DeSilva FU with a 4-60 alky motor on it. Boat was beautiful. We never got the 4-60 running but it sure looked good. The guy I worked for at Dade Marine gave him a KG-9 for it. We had a blast with those boats. He had a car but only a learners permit, that didn't stop us from driving anywhere we wanted towing one boat on top of the other.
    The great old days.
