I love some looper offshore action, 1989 Carry le Rouet. Just listen to those Johnson GT200's! Racing starts at 1:50.

05-22-2020, 05:37 PM #6786I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

Charlie Strang was called upon to design a Racing Gear Case with Forward-Neutral-Reverse because it was an APBA Class requirement at the time. Subsequently, when the competition shifted to 99 cubic inch motors, the shift requirement was eliminated. Charlie was an Executive for OMC at the time, and during a plant wide annual shut-down, he went into the Engineering Department, sat down at a Drawing Board (this was long before the days of Computer Graphics), and over the course of several days, he designed an absolutely fabulous forward-only Racing Gear Case.
Just as in his Full Shift Gear Case for the 89 cubic inch Johnson GT-115, the Direct Drive Gear Case was a twin Pinion Shaft design with both Pinion Gears driving the same "Bull Gear". The "Bull Gear" was one part with gear teeth on both the forward and aft sides of the same part. The way I understand it, the "Bull Gear" had a female spline on the ID and was mounted on a male spline on the shaft, in much the same was as a Clutch Dog is on an OMC conventional shifting Gear Case except the forward-aft movement of the "Bull Gear" is extremely, extremely small in comparison. Charlie's Racing Direct Drive Racing Gear Case was assembled from the front and permitted a much better hydrodynamic forward-to-aft taper leading the Propeller. During the set up of the Racing Gear Case, Shims must be used on the Pinion Shafts and the driven shaft, and this set up must be performed by an experienced OMC Racing Gear Case Technician. When properly set up, Charlie's Design essentially ensured equal loading on the twin Pinion Shafts and their respective Pinion Gears.
Charlie's Racing Gear Case Design was used on the 99 cubic inch, V4, Johnson Model KC-13R "Stinger"; the 99 cubic inch, V4, Johnson Model KR-15M "Stinger GP; the the 121 cubic inch, V6, Johnson "Singer GP"; the 4 Rotor Johnson Rotary Combustion Racing Engine, and list goes on and on to the Racing V6 and Racing V8 Formula One Outboard Motors. The way I understand it, if the OMC Racing Outboard Motors were only used by Factory Drivers, then those Racing Outboard Motors did not have a Model Number.
Charlie was a Racer himself for many years back in the 1930s up until WWII, and he was also a brilliant engineer who had the passion, drive and understanding of Outboard Boat Racing. Charlie Strang's contributions to Outboard Boat Racing are Legendary.
Hope that this helps.

EVINRUDE STILL HOLDS THE RECORD - The record for the fastest speed for an outboard powered boat is 176.556 mph (284.14 km/h) set by Bob Wartinger (USA) in a Karelsen hull powered by a 3.5 litre Evinrude V-8 on the Colorado River neat Parker, Arizona on November 30, 1989. Running at close to 10,000rpm with a overdrive gearcase, this incredible motor powered a 20 foot, 3-point hydroplane to a 2-way average of 176.556mph. During testing it easily exceeded 190mph but was damaged after hitting an object in the water. It was expected to exceed 200mph until than unfortunate incident.

To Shim properly to ensure "equal loading" to me, seems to me to be as much art as science. How can one "ensured equal loading" were the gear case obstructs the view (measurement gauge readings) of the contact areas?
I wonder if the experienced Technician, is relying on his feel when he turns the shaft by hand.
