I tapped into the lower on the opposite side where the -10 hose enters and run a gauge that reads both vacuum and pressure.
I see a low amount of vacuum at a cruise around 40mph but have not taken the effort to look at this gauge at top speed. The gauge is visually blocked by the steering and the waters I generally run are congested. With my current top speed of a bit over 60 I am curious if those that talk of high water pressures from these pickups just see it at much higher speeds.

Or might it be the location of the pickup at the inner port strake is not getting a clean flow to it?
The WP in the powerhead drops to 0 at a 900 rpm idle starts rising by 1500 and runs 20-25 soon above that.

I thought about doing the same but hooking the line to the speedometer.

One thing I need to test is just how responsive the gauge I am using is. When I have a hose hooked up to run the motor I am not registering pressure before the pump when the engine is not running.

One thing I have to deal with up here is my late season outings I ocasionally see below freezing temps on my tow home so it is possible the gauge is not healthy.

    Sure,
These show the pickup orientation and a side view giving an idea of the shape of the inlet.
Then each side of the unfinished lower, first of which was taken two years ago and the pressure line to the gauge taken today.

    Hey,

I did it this way, made a mold and made two pices that i glued on to the transom. Did it more as a backup as I experienced some problems with seaweed clogging up my internal channels.

Great thread on LWPU's. I was always concerned about misc trash floating about getting pushed in. I like the filter idea. Looking at all the pictures of the OP progress was well done indeed, however...I don't miss the headaches salt water boating brings ( electrolysis and corrosion battles ).. Born and raised on salt water boating, I now enjoy the fresh water side of boating. Two different worlds I know...just sayin..

Although..same boat in salt water, then in fresh water...is faster in salt water!

    question

Since this is THE thread on low water pickup I will pose my question here.

I will be running the transom low water pickup to a stock 15" Merc 1500. Should I plug the original water intake holes in the lower unit or leave them?

    Thanks.

I would plug them with epoxy. If you find you have trouble getting the water pump to prime then drill a small hole through one of the epoxy plugs just to get a little water in there (but you prob wont need to)

    Cool

Thanks for the reply Mr Demeanor. I especially like the idea of leaving one open for priming.

Yeah, that photo was just a teaser to see if anyone was out there.

Don't forget to give us a Video!!

So I just read the whole thread.. Amazing project. Obviously not your first rodeo working in the saw dust and wood glue/epoxy.

I love working with wood. That and a little glass and varnish/paint, and there is nothing you cant build!! You can either drive it or fly it..guess in your case it's a little of both.

An old friend of mine builds custom mahogany old time boats. I understand and appreciate what amount of time it takes to do what you just did.

    Great Job!!

Now we just need a video.

Ok, here is my low water setup.

I went with 2 dash 8 lines because I like symmetry, and AN fittings. With this lower unit the cavitation plate is right in the way of the highest place to install the fittings in the lower unit so I did a little removal and shaping. A flap disk on a 4 1/2" angle grinder cuts the aluminum housing like butter with lots of control. I left the lower original water pickup hole open on each side to assist with priming and as a pressure release. We shall see if it works soon.
It is not fully hooked up yet because I am waiting on the arrival of a jackplate. Once that is on I will figure the correct length for these two pickup lines.

Hey, the pictures are free so...

Looks nice, do you have enough hose length so the motor can be tilted up without ripping the Adel clamps from the hull?
