Also not heard of go fast land in Oregon?
Talking w/a bud last night, saying that’s still on my bucket list.
I didn't realize it but about 15 years ago me and a HD friend did a coast ride spring to NorCal see my brother, foothills into Tahoe. ( PS, ever get that way, take HWY 36 from Fortuna on the coast ( south of Eureka) to Red Bluff SUPER ride!) Then did the other side the "bumps" ( Cascade Mountain Range
eastern high desert) coming back. We were probably east Alvord Dry lake about 100 miles. We did (on 395 now Oregon out of NorCal) ride by weather beaten signs, "Lake Camping , Cabins for Rent". Then some beaten down structures, picnic tables rotting away in the sun, and sure had one hell of a beach, as THERE WAS NO LAKE!! Akali lake (dry). Trust me, western and eastern Washington and Oregon are like a different planets!

[QUOTE=David - WI;3158596]We all know how it is... in your head "there's a 1% chance this might kill me"; in reality it's probably more like 50/50.

more like 90/10 at those speeds , RIP

Autoblog reports that the average speed of Combs’ two runs in opposite directions across Oregon’s Alvord Desert on Aug. 27 was 531.889 mph, which would break the current women’s land speed record of 512.710 mph, set in 1976 by Kitty O’Neil at the same location.

The Harney County Sherriff’s said Monday that an examination of the wreckage has led investigators and Combs’ team to conclude that the front wheel of the vehicle suffered a failure, likely from striking an object on the dry lake bed at approximately 550 mph. The report added that Combs, 39, died from blunt force trauma to her head before the vehicle caught fire.

I don't get that. Don't they make sure the course is clear?

They must, but at 550 mph... maybe she either got a little outside the "track" they had cleared or something walked/ran/blew onto the course?

Could be what ever it was blended into the terrain and went undetected.
Do they grade the surface and then pack it down before they hold speed runs?
At those speed you have to have a very level surface. I remember running my Mustang at around 140+ once on a blacktop road that had almost zero traffic on weekends and what I thought was a fairly level road wasn't so level at 140.
