I've decided not to try and create a snout.
This is because there is so much opinion about the perils of welding mid sections.
There are also strong recommendations to avoid even drilling holes in midsection.to
Here are some photos of what I have done to a 25inch 3.0L mid to make it a 18.700 inch.
It was to have a snout added that bolted to the extension plate but it decided that was a bridge tooClick image for larger version.

Now Michael Chapman on here can. make a bass mid look identical to a offshore mid and haven't heard of 1 breaking. I'd trust him doin mine for sure

But only mid I had that had 2 ,1n holes drilled in rear of mid , cracked 1st trip out I had it, I bought complete motor like that, the way the promax bass mid I'd drilled from factory is just fine but those big holes will make u loose a lower unit and expensive prop

whats the weight difference between a modified bass can and a 20" 280 smooth back. Must be about 80 lbs.
If I don't ask any questions, I'll never learn anything.

Been a while since I carried a 2.5 offshore midsection but they are heavy.
Bass stuff is much lighter, although I doubt there would be 80lb in it.
Other thing is I personally wouldn't modify a 2.5 bass leg, they are plentiful enough.
I have seen a 2.5 bass mid converted to open trunk with a welded snout but having spent 30 years welding, I wouldn't go there.
Risky enough doing what I'm doing with bolts.

That Aluminum the midsection are made of is like no other I've ever worked.
I'm not sure if it's the same brew as the lower units though.
I've welded the lowers no problem when they Crack across the thread.
The 3.0L mid I'm currently modifying is really brittle.
To cut out that recess in the mid above I drew the shape on the mid and then rather than go in with a cutting disc and cutting out the shape I cut lots of small vertical cuts down to the correct depth then hit all those little fingers with a hammer and they just snap off like they are made of glass.
Then just rasp it flat then file.
It is so hard that it doesn't clog the file.
I simply wouldn't weld it because there are too many unknowns.
The welds will hold until the day they don't.

Made of glass ... LOL, Yep !

It's not so much the sludge they mix together and call it aluminum. It has more to do with the heat treat process it goes thru before machining.
If your going to weld on an outboard can (any of them) the first thing you need to do is bake it for at least an hour @ 400 degrees. Bring it back slowly to aprox. 200 degrees .. and weld with 4043 till your heart's content. When your done, bring it up to 400 degrees, then shut the oven off and let it come back slow.

If you drill a hole in it , you need to weld a doubbler plate around the perimeter as well as inside the hole. I find it easier to put a short piece of tubing in the hole and weld it in place. The tube acts as corrugation (change of direction) and IT WON'T CRACK ...
