Important little piece to have as Chris stated. You also want to check rubber seal is in good condition or purchase a new one, they are under $10
I use an shorten old broom handle with one end turned down to the ID of seal to reinstall.

    54196A6 --CARRIER ASSEMBLY

Always wondered why it was called that because its a Crank Shaft to Drive shaft Grease seal. I keep two handy all the time. I also use red Loctite around the lip when I install them in the crank. They are notorious for coming loose and dropping if not properly installed or dropping a lower. And definitely a generous supply of a Good grade marine grease applied to the Drive shaft splines before reinstalling the power head or lower.
