It also depends how OLD your asking about. During the Late 50's and early 60's the Direct Reversing L6's came naturally Left Handed. Merc offered Right Hand lower units for these to work on twin applications. Very rare to find a RHR DR these days.

This brings up another point. If you don't care about shifting the LHR lower unit you can find an old 800 Direct reverse and put it on one motor. It will run LHR props, but will not shift. Its been done.

It depends how old is old. DR motors yes, I have some of both rotation. FGS motors say 62 up to 88, no they never made a consumer fishing boat left hand lower.

    Race stuff is race stuff.

A bit off topic. Will a small XR V6 case fit an inline mid? They made lefts in that platform didn’t they? I know very little about V6 stuff.

This is off topic also but did a set of 1.78 gears drop into a XS case without to much pain? I ran a 1.78 case way back when ya couldn't find props taller than a 30 in. pitch. That when I started playing with SSM,s I do still have a set of NOS 1.78 gears settin in the shop. Hum?

The XS case don’t know the difference. Just have to shim pinion height and set lash and good to go with 1.78. I bought a pinion height tool to Help. These gears and a 28 is within reach of 90 with the right boat.

I think all I need is a set of seals and shims to do a swap on a old XS case that needs a new prop shaft. Back to the counter rotating gears. I found the old catalog they list counter rotating gear sets for the 150 inline six. It's in a old Merc Hi performance catalog I can't find a date on it right now but it has Blackmax formula 2 and formula 1 engines. It has the full color front cover on it. The part # for the right hand set is 65895A1 the left hand set is 65896A1. I knew I seen these in a old catalog. A few years ago Raceman and I talk about these sets he was looking for them for a twin inline toy. I just found a date on the catalog at the bottom of the page, 1979. The gear sets are on page 9.

I’ll look in my 1974 catalog and see if the gears are
listed. I wonder why they needed LHR for the Inline in 1979. The L6 was about dead in the water by then for racing expecially twins.

I looked though all my old Merc racing catalogs and didn't find them in the 1973 catalog but they still had them listed in my 1980. The catalogs I have after that didn't list them. I'm still trying to find them listed earlier than 1979. I wonder if they ever sold very many of them? Can't believe there could have been much demand for em?

I don’t have a clue what the demand would have been that late in the Inline career?

I noticed those as well a few years ago and did a pretty extensive search, couldn't find any old stock or anyone who actually saw a set or the required thrust bearings and related parts that would be needed. Let alone props that could be used besides choppers and cleavers.

Lota posts ....I think ya runned off the org poster. Early V6 cases had locker cases. All merc did was use a round stock to jamb the shiftdog back into the R gear. The prop thrust went thru the round spacer block to the front tapper bearing...... easy to replicate.

    Thanks erverone that answered,

I have an old 1955 22ft lonestar that I want to put twin 115 I6 on it but it had twin 90 I6 and it was scary with both right hand motors. I guess I will go with newer motors that I can get Left and right. Thanks again for all the info.

Hey Dave you ever consider bringing the rig to some of the antique outboard meets?
