Another fact is OMC did run the very successful F1-V8 series for nine years.
Started 1981 and ended after the 1989 season.
Millions of spectators around the world and sometimes up to 500,000 people watching from the shore.
Many major sponsors and here is a list of some..
Cool, Aspen, Carlsberg, JPS, Benson&Hedges, Martini, Castrol, Nordica, Nashua, Denim, Champion, Trimite, Peter Stuyvesant, Gordon's Gin, Tecnocar, Beneteau, Dole, ITC,
Lasse Strom Marin, Naiu, ToTip, Stefanel and many more.
The eighties was by far the most interesting time in tunnel boat racing.

Bob Spalding in the #11 Velden Racing/JPS/Johnson V8 from 1981/82.
Probably to most famous motorsports sponsor ever.Last edited by lars strom; 11-03-2017 at 08:16 AM.

OPC Racing Is Nearing Extinction
The latest PR release from "Mercury Racing" (pricing, etc) seems to imply that any OPC product production will cease altogether in 2019. APBA went from a webpage to Facebook (cheaper and staff in Detroit not needed anymore).

I dont know why selling kits to convert your own fish engine to a race engine is not the way to go?

IMO, that's the answer. IMO, Merc wouldn't allow it.
BTW, I misspoke. Formula 150, not 100.
I had a guy funding an engine project early in and I liked what I saw.
The paradigm shift is, there will no longer be factories offering motors.
We only need somone to fab up a mid w/interchangeable tops (similar to Wayne Taylor's 16" Mids) and a gear case. On mids, I always meant to draw one up that was alum plate Allen screeed together.
On gear cases, I don't know. Run Mecs and the supply tap would likely be shut off.
I don't see the issue in doing a CNC program for your own housing.
Find a gear ratio that works for everyone and send it out for bid.
Lots of people cut gears.I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

Ron Hill was thinking about a stainless ssm and thinking it could be done lots cheaper than a Merc.
He has a foundry and milling machines.

Boom!
Ron is a huge fan of classes to revive the sport.
IMO, again, if you truly want racing to succeed, you HAVE to have brand competition.
Take best Merc guy, best OMC guy, best Yammi guys, that are more concerned w/their sport surviving (clearly on life support in the US) than what motor wins, lock yjrm
in a room together and figure out a target they could all hit reliably/dependably, i.e. 7500 RPM, and pick the parts.I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

and emission regs...both Merc and BRP have DFI which can do both race at high revs and be EPA friendly.

Very sexy Evinrude F1-V8 and you must love the World Champion text/info.
The 3.5 liter 2 stroke V8 looper, fuel injection with six inch mid section was available for UIM/APBA F1 racing over 32 years ago. Still the fastest and most loved racing outboard ever.

You never see photos of the internals, I guess they never blow up?

Very few blow up but I remember some issues. I write about them soon.
The two first pictures are with fuel injection, next three carb.

One little but very annoying problem with the F1-V8 engine was the screw (#7) holding to carburetor bowl to the body broke off the heads..and a fuel leak started.
I was told it was from vibrations at high RPM and OMC gave us new heavy duty screws but they still broke off the screw heads.
After half the 1983 season OMC finally figured our how the correct this little annoying problem.
A 25 cent part cost me a lot of good racing results.

London GP 1984 - Team Molinari/Martini/Evinrude F1-V8
#18 Renato Molinari, #19 Kicco Vidoli and #35 Barry Woods.
Barry Woods won the race over Billy Seebold in his Seebold with Mercury big bore T4 power and Johnny Sanders driving a new Burgess with the Mercury Wizard.
Yes..its the facts.

I reckon that hull in that paint scheme was one of the best looking of the tunnel boats IMO...........
