1976 Merc 1500 Shorty
1976 Mercury 1500 Short Shaft
Serial number - 4748320. Numbers matching on block and midsection.
Powerhead- completely torn down, media blasted to bare metal, baked on primer and painted with 2 coats of high-quality Acrylic Urethane. Block is still standard bore, pistons weight matched to within .5 grams. All new bearings, rings, seals. Bores were lightly honed and within .002 of nominal spec. Labyrinth seals on reeds measured and within normal limits. All high dome, three ring pistons installed. Carbs soaked, cleaned and rebuilt with new gaskets, needles and seats. Fuel pump soaked and cleaned and rebuilt with new parts. New timing belt. Brand new starter. All gas lines replaced with new ethanol resistant hose. All wiring in excellent shape. Compression before first start is 137-142 on all cylinders. This is NOT a J block motor.
Midsection- Completely disassembled, blasted, primed and painted same as powerhead. New Solid mounts upper and lower. Swivel pin has no play in the bottom bushing. Comes with trim rams but NO HOSES OR PUMP.
Lower Unit- Disassembled, blasted, primed and painted as above. New seals and new upper driveshaft bearing. Lower shimmed to factory specs. Pressure tested to 15 lbs for overnight. Straight cut 2-1 gears installed. All gears in excellent condition. One scratch on the bullet of the gear case from moving it around in the garage. DAMNNNN !!!!!!!!!
Cowling- louvered cowling stripped and painted. No dents or dings. 7 or the eight screens are INTACT. New Repro decals installed. No bubbles or creases. Latches all work smooth. Looks as good as factory. This cowling alone is worth $600 in this condition.
Motor only has an hour of break in time on a test stand with 100 Av Gas. It will need full break in and final timing checked and set. Carbs will need minor tweaking when in the water.
No prop, gas tank, controls, trim hoses or trim pump included. Will test run on test stand and answer any an all questions. Bring your own guy to check it out if you wish. Will provide detailed pics of any part of the motor that you want.
If you want a discount, I will keep the louvered cowl and sell for $4000
Used motor sold AS IS / WHERE IS. Located in Palm Bay, FL. Zip code 32905
WILL NOT SHIP
$4500

That is a beautiful motor! Hope to learn to perform that quality of work someday. (Recently picked up a few inline 6's to practice on )
Good luck with sale.

Yes, everything he does comes out really nice.
I saw one of his I6 motors (1973 Blue Stripe 1500 ) on a friends 15 ally...Boat and motor both sweet...The motor was redone by Tom S.
The boat done by (OldSkier) Bernie.James H. W2F a V-King... Want 2 Fly a V-King

Damn beautiful motor, man. Classic outboards/boats aren't like classic cars, sadly.

Beautiful job for sure, just don't see um like that often.......Boy does that motor bring back memories.....
spent the summer of 1975 in Charleston SC with relatives, water skied every day and on several occasions there were a pair of brothers that had matching 15' Checkmates with Merc 1500's on them......Hmmmm.....maybe that was where i was first bitten by the "Scream and Fly" Bug?
