Laugh but:
Had a dock neighbor at Lake Erie that bought a new 33' Scarab center console w/twin 225's.
Gorgeous boat that ran low 60's for its newbie owner.
It stayed in water, at dock w/no bottom paint.
Couple months later he and the gang were loading up w/scrub brushs and cleaning supplies.
When I quizzed him he reported that top speed had dropped to 30, it would barely plane and they were headed to the beach to scrub the bottom.
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

And then there were two.
An excellent score.
'1999 250 hp carb motor. Same as the 225 HO and IMO, the best carb motor they ever built.
One owner, dealer maintained, repower trade, w/rigging, harness, stainless prop, oil tank etc.
Clean as a pin, zero corrosion.
Pending satisfactory inspection and compression test happening now.
Have leads on two more donor motors/p.heads for FrankenRude upgrades and then swap p.heads and keep these for spares.
Really getting geeked to get these motors, paint them silver to match the boat, screw em on and spend a Saturday in a lawn chair beside a cooler, staring at the project.
Love it!
BTW, sun lounge is done and ready for paint.Last edited by Instigator; 12-19-2018 at 06:12 PM.

Came out of the mold good.
Basic shape and size are also good.
Ill finish mocking it up and fitting it to the boat then glass the bajesus out of it.
I like it so far.
BTW, its about 3" low where its hanging on the back of the boat.I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

According to my math, the enclosed center pod = 340 lbs of bouyancy.
I like that a lot.
Should make up for the additional weight and moving it backwards 4’.I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

Gary, how much set back did you build into that bracket. I would keep it at an absolute minimum (6-12" max) due to the weight of the motors and narrow beam at the transom. I was running 25" of setback on my Checkmate 2800 and that was too much. It was great for running fast (55+) but not much else...especially after rigging the 3.0L motors. Had I kept my boat, I would've re-rigged her with a Bob's Tandam hyd. 6" jackplate or maybe had Scott Porta build a small setback hyd. Jackplate. There's not a lot of width in the planning surface of the 25' and 28' Checkmates to carry a heavy load at slower speeds (which is one of the reasons they're so fast when running above 60 mph--less friction due to less surface drag). In the end, I wound up getting the boat to consistently run 76+ mph with a full tank (96 gallons) and full cabin (bunks, v birth, cabinets, gear) running the Merc 3.0L 250 EFI's with a set of Mercury Bravo One FS 28's (which I still have). I also thought about moving the batteries into the cabin to help change the COG but never got around to it...
