Let's see, been in bussiness for close to 50 years, they've actively raced throughout the years, they've been competetive and yes, they've been fairly mass produced so their factory rigging may not be up to the standard of a custom rigged boat but, if you look at any of Randy "Wildman" Corsen's Checkmate creations they would be right there with any Progression, Superboat, etc. Velocity's were also mass produced; would you question their "quality"?? I believe all these 21/22 foot V bottoms have their own merrits..some better slightly better than others, some fairly equal. The bottom line is that you can't go wrong with any 21' Checkmate Pulsare, 22' Velocity, 21' Superboat, 22' Progression, etc. for the ability to handle relatively snotty water, the fun factor, the ability to run fast (upwards of 90 with the right power) and versatility (carry at least 5 passengers, have a small cuddy to get out of the weather, storage, etc.).

Greg, the prop was a dr4 and the hp peaked at 303 at 6200. I wonder what a Dave Bush modified 300x would do on Ben's boat(maybe 100) Frank

If I'm not mistaken "Waterheater" was out of the Convincor series of hulls in the early 90s? Those were 24 degree deadrise straight V's. I think they made them in 23', 25', and then the boat pictured which I think is the 28 footer. If Checkmate brought back the 23 Convincor O/B as a new offering, they would have a wave crusher on there hands that was fast as well.

On a related note, can you buy a "new" 2100 Pulsare today? I'm assuming that Hustler has built several over the last couple of years since The List was started but at the same time I have not seen Wildman do any new ones. I think the last one he did was the deeper V 24' model but I'm not sure.

Not surprised you ran a "dr4" prop Frank. Maybe a less expensive route (and still List Qualified) is for B kNo023 to find an old (true Spinelli Brothers) dr4 wheel and throw it on there to see what he thinks. Plenty of time to run until Thanksgiving. I have seen some guys use the dr4 wheels with great success in a variety of propshaft heights.

guy in bellmore or oceanside area has a 21 with a 300xs dont know if he comes on here too much if checkmate is still building boats im sure they will make one http://www.screamandfly.com/showthre...to-Long-Island

Just want to note that one of the reasons Ben's boat runs as fast as it does is that Rob from Raybo blueprinted the bottom. His boat is also lighter then mine. We had 3 1985 22' Velocitys out Sunday. Ben's floats about 4" higher in the water then the other 2. That's with no one in each boat. Because we have put knees in all 3 of these boats and a couple others too. Bens is the only one I have seen with 4 stringers instead of 2 with bulkheads about every 2'. Maybe Rob can comment on where the weight savings may be and how much of the additional speed is from the bottom. Anyway thanks for the help on this boat Rob, your work is great!

yup that checkmate is on a hydrohoist at bay park marina in oceanside, never looked to see what prop he's running

I'll measure for you Greg. Where do you want the measurement? Up near dash or in the aft where back seat rests? And you want the actual gunnel where the cleat sits or the top of the cockpit area. Not going to be able to get to it until late tomorrow.
