Mercury Hub Question
What are the pros/cons of the Mercury SSR 8M0101601.
Currently I run a 840237-C with the 4 rubber strips. I have heard the SSR provides smoother shifts but not sure how it will stand up on a STV with a 225 Sport XS.
Thoughts???

I ran that hub on an STV Euro with a 225 Promax. Used it with a 30 Et Lightning and a Promax 4 blade. Worked fine in both. Was told to keep an eye on the slots where the drive sleeve slides into the adapter sometimes they will develop cracks. Mine never did but I didn't have a ton of hours on them either.

Always worked fine for me but it will take some effort to remove from a prop. Won't fall out like the solid hubs. Some have been able to hammer them out. I needed to use a bottle jack, socket and wood rigged underneath something heavy to press them out.

Pro: smoother shifts
Con: very tight fit. Not going to work if you plan on moving it frequently from prop to prop. I have two of them to avoid the removal process

Not recommended for surfacing applications (80+mph). The smooth shifting is really beneficial on center consoles with joystick engines that shift a lot more than our rigs. In higher stress applications the rubber portion can oscillate and cause failure.

I've never removed one. I put both in by tightening the prop on the shaft and forcing the hub into the prop. Getting either out would be a bugger.
Shift quality mattered a lot more with my old 225 Promax (idle 1100 +/-) than with my 200XS (idle 600+/-)

Why does the Mercury solid hub insert get loose over time? When they are brand new they are nice and snug and after a season they are loose fitting? If all 4 plastic strips are still attached how or why would it get a little bit of play? Anything to be concerned with or is there a way to shim it to fit tight?
