Ill recheck dva today as the plugs are out and its setup and report back.

im going to re-confirm the spark failure cylinder, and replace the green wire between pack and coil and retest.. saw some of them looked a little worn, however the wiring doesnt seem to bad like others ive seen with crumbling insulation/etc-

Also - is it true that a needle voltage meter is better than the digital ones? ie a bouncing needle would indicate dropping?

Shift switch prop shouldn’t turn in neutral

cable or switch is out. More likely cable if it was in neutral.

the up an down is from not being in water. Mainly

other possibilities exhist as mentioned, has it been a pain to start only starting when you wiggle stuff.

That motor is years before a shift switch... It sounds to me to need some more idle timing and the coil harnesses checked. These motors aren't getting any younger.

I would go through the link and sync again make sure throttle plates are closed at idle, roller is set correct. Then take it to the ramp with the motor at the same height it would normally be at rest and warm it up drop it into gear probably find idle is low, only use the idle timing screw to set idle rpm Not the throttle stop screw. As soon as you touch the throttle stop screw you will change the sync and sometimes can crack the throttle plates.

jus gonna add, don't worry 'bout what tha numbers (idle timin') are.. jus make both you and tha motor happy..

one other thing.. you said "went thru carbs"?.. did you replace all carb gaskets, inside and outside with new ones?

just finished link and sync - fyi the open spark gap test, is that during cranking or running? during cranking its hardly doing its thing. Will run now and see..

Pri throttle pickup is at 11 degrees -

noone can confirm the little wires coming from coils - should they touch ground?

be back later with more results -

and yes - new gaskets on all carbs.. needles, everything..

The ground wires on the coils should ground to the divider plate.

Redid open spark test this evening - and all 6 passed, i just couldnt see it in the sunlight.. However -

*** Major update - I set the flywheel to #1 firing mark (12 degrees ATDC), put my degree wheel ontop, and marked 2,3,4,5 and 6 every 60 degrees - and in between 2-3,3-4,4-5,5-6 twice so I could see if it was firing in the wrong place. Well lo and behold!! This thing is all over the place, majority are firing on 2-3 and 4-5, when I was watching #6 i kept seeing the 462 mark come and go and this had me wondering if the packs might be cross firing -

Sooo - what causes both packs to cross fire so badly?!! yikes theyre not even 4 hours run time.. is the stator at fault possibly? cos i did use the old stator with new packs for a while but it seemed ok - cos first run it ran like a banshee off idle..

Thanks, they are going down onto black powerhead / paint - what purpose do they serve?Reduce noise?

You said you changed the stator? When you did how were the flywheel magnets?

If your fire is all over the place , just put another set boxes on maybe the old ones or used ones , I've seen so so so many of these boxes take a **** out of the blue , also new ones out of the box. Really no way to test a box except run em ,, possibly flywheel also. But I'd look at boxes again gud luck

Have you tried to run it in the dark? Take spray bottle filled with water and mist around coils, wires and plugs. Any leaking spark will show up.

Hi - can 1 bad pack throw the firing out all over the place? ie I probably have one good pack form b4, and one bad- Would removing the bias wire isolate the pack/bank?

tx for the misting tip - all wires new and I dremeled the insides, blew out with brake cleaner to mostly shiny color and smeared with di grease - was some black stuff in coils..

The latest video from yesterday after complete timing/link and sync check - sputtering real bad, all coils pass open gap test but the packs are firing all over the place..

if timing is way off, I would look for something mechanically wrong with the flywheel, or for bad switchboxes.

However, this makes me think of a bad low-speed winding on the stator or a bad rectifier:

An easy test is to move the tachometer lead to the other half of the rectifier and see if you still get a tach reading.
