SeaDek type products
What are the pros and cons of foam decking, like SeaDek, for a performance river boat? Is it heavier than carpet?
Thanks in advance.

It weighs next to nothing. There on no cons to it other then cost and the light colors require cleaning and if you get to aggressive with a power washer it can get torn up. I use my small washer (2500 psi) with a 15 degree tip and stay off of it by 6" or so and life is good.

There’s a couple different base materials for this. One is poly ethylene and the other might be polyurethane based. I can’t recall 100% what the other base material is but one stains and one doesn’t. That’s about the only difference they look and feel the same

Ability to resist stains is important to me. Maybe someone will chime in that knows which type is which. Thanks, guys.

Totally subjective, but I didn't care for the look of it when I saw it in person. OP, have you ever seen it up close? It does look like quality stuff, I just liked the look of carpet on my Allisons better. My black carpet was pristine on two of my Allison's, never saw a need to change that. But I know some people swear by it. To each their own.

The cheap stuff I bought from Amazon says its stainproof. It seems to be true. I went magnet fishing, and I left the steel magnet on the floor of the boat for 2 weeks. It left a deep heavy rust stain. A little vinyl cleaner took the rust stain right out. Looks brand new. Grease and oil cleaned up easy also.

I have a folder here I keep with information from boat shows I attend. So heres the skinny on Seadek; its made from XPE foam which is a polyethylene product. As Im sure most of you are familiar it is beautiful to stand on with bare feet and it is quite durable. Downside is it stains pretty bad and hard to clean off.
As an alternative there is AquaTraction by Advanced Marine Flooring which is made from EVA foam which is ethylene vinyl acetate. Keep in mind here I have yet to try this product although i am almost certainly going to put it in my boat I do not yet have real world experience. At a boat show I was at they had this stuff laid out on the floor and everyone was walking on it and it looked great. The guy was demoing stain resistance and whatnot and it sure had me convinced it was a better material. It felt the same or at least similar enough to me as seadek that I couldnt differentiate by touch. Hope this helps some of you guys outHydrostream dreamin

Yes, I have seen it in person John S.
Great info on the two different products, LakeFever!
Thanks so much for all the info, fellas. I spent $1400 putting new, Allison, carpet in my '86 XTB about four years go. I took great care of it, vacuumed it regularly, and have enjoyed it. But unfortunately, two winters ago, while it was under cover, the helm began slow leaking oil from around the shaft seal. It drained down into the carpet under the helm and migrated outward to ruin the carpet in an area from the seat base to the hotfoot, and sideways out past the side console. It stained it darker and wrinkled the carpet beyond recuperating it, IMO. I'm just considering my options here. I may just order enough new carpet to replace that whole middle area in the boat, however.Last edited by AlliStan; 05-08-2024 at 10:35 PM.

I have Aqua Traction in my 2020 Checkmate and it will be 5 years old late this year. The boat sits in a covered dock lift and under the roof the boat is covered with a Marine Concepts cover. For at least 6 months the bimini top is deployed, so it has not had that much sun on it in 160 hours of use. It looks great, feels great, will help the resale, but I doubt I would do it again. It is very high maintenance. Perhaps the light grey color I chose makes it worse?? A bit of water from a water bottle, from rain, from your feet in the lake, will leave a ring colored stain that requires upholstery cleaner or soap to remove it. I have always been able to remove the stains, but i am contantly cleaning it.

Joe that looks sweet. How many years on the seadek now? Any concerns with it?
