One of the main reasons I like driving dragsters over fast door cars is that they are inherently stable . ( I did drive it around the road course at Moroso / PBIR for a lap one time , but that's another story )
Anything over a 10 mph corner tried to pull the wheel out of my hand. But then at 200+ you can pretty much let go of the wheel ...
I can understand the outboard drag boat guys not wanting to run a rudder . With the motor hanging outside the back of the boat , it takes a little extra time to get the " rudder above the propshaft, out of the water" . Pretty critical at that time to have full control of the steering .
The car motor drag boats , while having a heavier motor , it is quite a bit further forward and that along with having quite a bit more torque , gets them on top quite a bit faster . Now maybe if you forced them to slide the motor all the way back to the transom and hitch it to a locked inboard/outboard drive system , it would experience the same ill handling till the case is out of the water.
The use of a rudder on a top end , two point's up front and prop rider in the back type boat , well ya just cant take it for a lap around the road course .. err .. lake and expect it to be happy .
A guy came into the shop yesterday and we discussed shortening up a pair of mids for his boat. I said , I had one of those boats before , are you sure you really want two motors on such a small boat ... ? He asked , have you ever broke a skeg off at high speed , I said no sir i havent , he said, I'll never own a boat with one motor ever again ... point well taken about havin something to keep it goin straight ...

Hey...any news on an outboard running a kilo record?... Via the UIM ?
nice to see Bob Wartinger/ UIM still require an engineered cockpit ( signed off by an engineer say you'll be ok) for speeds on a kilo of 150mph plus ,
yet a regular cockpit can run in an oval race, with 8 other boats next to you at speeds above 150mph.... With a regular cockpit...( something the chairman of safety at the UIM said " we didn't discuss")
A huge conflict of interest , and abuse of position from Bob Wartinger, considering he's the chairman of cockpit safety with the UIM .. Making rules to make your own record (175mph) impossible to beat....I guess it's hard to sell books, " motivational" seminars, and self promote yourself etc if someone blows his record away and you don't hold a world record....Last edited by Warby Motorsport; 12-18-2015 at 07:32 AM.

As of right now I am not concerned with the UIM. A record is a record and everyone will know. We are doing it with or without them. IHBA regulations, as far as safety and speed verification is good enough for me and most of the rest of the world. It is hard enough to attempt this without someone setting rules that are unattainable . Hope all out there will push forward with there dreams of new records. Merry Christmas and I hope some records fall this nex year.

Dan, it makes you wonder how someone can get on the UIM cockpit committee , yet ever built a race boat or cockpit before?......maybe the UIM should consider checking questionable boat designs as well, as these are the types of boats that will end up using their cockpits...
Bob Wartinger has a lot of hard questions to answer, we think he uses his position at the UIM as a self promotion tool for his own business, I really question of he's qualified to be preaching cockpit safety in powerboats at speed above 200mph , both H1 unlimited hydroplanes , and all drag boat racing associations have more demonstrated experience with high speed powerboat crashes at speeds over 200 mph than Bob Wartinger, just ask H1 hydroplanes safety engineer Doug Ford,.. Even Doug questions Wartingers rules and expertise....H1 & Drag boat guys have play safe for decades, no UIM in sight.......the UIM comisafe/ cockpit committee make up rules to justify their existence
we have had a few H1 teams , outboard racers email us, firstly all agree Wartinger is just making up rules to make sure he's record can't be broken, so he can carry on his private business , giving motivational, safety and pr seminars as " the world record holder".... And also agree the rules he puts in place in the UIM cockpit committee are Un-obtainable . Please note...... Even a jet ski rider gets to vote on what you can do with you boat at 200mph....at the uim
Now....... If you event is being run by a UIM event promotor ( where the UIM will get a cut of the money) the UIM WILL AND HAS FOR DECADES... Turned a blind eye to cockpit rules, we and others have a long list that I'll be released in a media event next year, The UIM list of current speed records and event champions are littered with boats that have set UIM Worlds that don't have a UIM approved cockpit, or built by a UIM cockpit builder....
The UIM can't make any money out of a father & son going for a world record,..
Many boats have raced, yet Ken and I have built boats and cockpits to the rules of the day around 4 times over the pasted decade. only to be to no..... You can't go for a wwsr.... No consideration for the time and money we have spent meeting the rules of the day
The UIM is only the governing body for the clubs and associations that it over see's... NOT EVERYTHING IN POWERBOAT RACING
The Australian APBA Is NOTHING more than a lapdog for the UIM, and don't even advocate for the man (an Australian) who holders the current world water speed record at 317.60, the holder of 2 world water speed records, 2 time UIM gold medalist ,only person in history to ever design, build and drive a boat to a world water speed record.. first Australian to ever hold an unlimited speed record, in the first 200 to be inducted into the Australian national sporting hall of fame, the only boat racer in their, as well as an M.B.E medal from the queen of England .. And a guy who is an engineer, boat builder, designer, with decades of racing experience
Our new boat is only months away from running
http://warbymotorsport.com/Spirit_of_Australia_II.php
I can't see us running with the UIM, we will still follow the exact timing rules. So the the worlds fastest boat will be the worlds fastest boat....I urge Climax to do the same with his outboard world record....we really wish you the best too !!!!
If we had a UIM promoter ... We more than likely wouldn't have to write post like this
Once our boat takes to the water, a media release regarding the Australian APBA & UIM cockpit issues will be sent to all major outlets ( we are talking with now).. With solid evidence ... So the Australia APBA , and UIM can expect a call for info, their side of the story soon, in public
The UIM is basically the same as FIFA nowadays ..but on water... It's about the dollars ... Long lunches, overseas trips... Selective rules...back room deals
if your thinking of challenging a water speed record, on a kilo at over 150mph.... Don't let the UIM cockpit crap stop you, just go for it.....safely of course
We consider safety the most important part of the project, and have gone out of our way many times building newer cockpits to the UIM rules, each time they are built and in the boat, the goal posts move... These projects cost hundreds of thousands in money, years of time, the UIM can't be trusted to move them again, we are current UIM and APBA registered cockpit builders tooLast edited by Warby Motorsport; 12-23-2015 at 09:52 PM.
