Hello all! I have a 1974 Glastron Carlson CV-16 (about 1100lbs with motor, light fuel and just me) with a 85hp crossflow. I will eventually have a 140hp crossflow, but for now it will get the 85hp. I know this is not a performance hull, but I would like to get the most out of it as I can. Does anybody have any experience with these old boats with jackplates? If I did get one it would be a manual one. hydraulic would be nice, but too much money for this old boat. Thank you :)
been there, done that, if it were me, I'd just work with the transom height manually and take what I get!
So there is no benefit from a jackplate on a 16' boat? planing, take off, performance? a manual jackplate is $200. so its a minimal investment even if there are only minimal gains.
IMHO, I wouldn't!!
Adding a jackplate to a 16 foot boat, will change the balance too much I think.

There has been a few that have ran 5 to 6" jack plates on the CVX 16, and with much larger motors. I think the CV 16 has a sharper vee than the CVX 16 though (?), so I'm not sure if the results would be the same. You might try getting ahold of Tom Brown over at classicglastron.com. He did a CVX 16 with 6" jack plate and a merc 225. I myself am about ready to have a little heart racing fun myself (or terror, depends on how you look at it).
The CVX does have a pad where the cv does not. I do not know if the V is sharper. I'll try and find him. Thanks for the reply. Good luck with your project.
Thanks. Ya my CVX 16 has a pad that is about 7" wide at the transom. I will be running a 1989 Johnson GT 200 on it. I have done a LOT to the boat to at least attempt to handle the weight and hp. I know people say that a jack plate would not be good on a cv/cvx 16, but the cvx 16 has the fuel tank in the bow so I think the balance would still be there somewhat (until the fuel runs low). I believe Tom Brown got his CVX 16 with the Merc 225 to 90 mph, but he said it was pretty much almost completely uncontrollable.Quote:
