Sportmaster lower unit question

Hey everyone, I have a structural question about the Sportmaster lower unit on a 1997 Mercury 2.5 offshore.

a number of years ago my friend went out to the lake in his 1992 STV Pro Comp Ski, when the unfortunate happened. As he was launching, he forgot to take one of the stern straps off of the boat, and when he went to pull the trailer out of the water, the boat came with it, dragging the skeg on the ramp. It is slightly bent, which brings me to my question.

Will the structural integrity of the lower unit/skeg be threatened if we mend the skeg by somehow bending it back, or does a whole new lower unit need to be purchased?

Yep, its doable. Of course, it cant be 100% again. Question is... is it gonna be good enough? I'll leave that to some of the more experienced members.

Thanks, that's what I thought. Fortunately his skeg is mostly just bent, so now I just have to find the correct tools for the job. Would heat be a bad idea as a means of making the metal more malleable?

no heat her up take it back SLOOOOOOOOOOOly youll be happy. ihave reshaped quite few over the years some did not need to be heated up i just peened them back with a not quite so big hammer a good vise but some were twisted and required heat a little at a time good luck

Awesome! Since the accident it was limited to 90 mph. Now we can get back into the triple digits!
