This engine had a lot of problems with its piston mass and its inability to shed thermal waste heat (Exhaust stroke). It's the main reason why OMC decided to go with 8 smaller slugs going up and down versus 6 when it came to displacement any larger than 3 litre. Merc's 3.4L V6 and OMC V8 ultimately met the same demise. Boat owners would rather spend their money on big outdrives than monster outboards (1980's and 1990's).
Here we are in 2018 and V8 behemoths are commonplace (Yamaha and Merc 4 strokes).
