Can anyone give me opinions on pros and cons of a drag motor vs a 280 or 260?
For most uses I'd take the 280 over the Drag. 280 has better bottom end and will still turn plenty of rpm to satisfy 98% of boaters. What is your intended use
Recreational boating. Looking at a 22DCB with twin drag motors. Don’t know much about outboards. Have heard the drag motors are not reliable, short life span, finicky, etc. owner says he has never had any problems. Also no record of hours.
They use the exact same parts so given the same rpm ranges the lifespan will be the same. The Drag might be single ring pistons which will just mean more ring changes. If you're looking to buy the rig I'd run a leakdown test. The Drag engine is no Optimax but I don't agree with them being inherently unreliable or finicky
