Recently I looked at a boat that was for sale and the trailer had electric brakes on both axles. I questioned this since I have never seen a boat trailer with other than surge brakes. He told me the manufacturer used electric because surge brakes have more maintenance issues.
Recently all the boat trailers I've seen had disc brakes but his had drum brakes.
Has anyone heard of this before?
Electric over hydraulic is what's appropriate for marine use. If someone has slapped on traditional electric brakes to a boat trailer they will work for a while until they self destruct and they become worthless. These are not intended to be submerged.
They may be electric over hydraulic and the owner simply doesn't understand the difference.
Mark, Thanks for your reply. I don't think they were electric over hydraulic because there was no actuator on the trailer tongue which is where they are usually mounted so the electric motor is out of the water during launch and retrieve.Quote:

Electric brakes do have maintenance issues also. I wouldn't want to submerge them!!!
