I spoke to commercial fisherman about water pump maintenance and they claim they will wear out an outboard before needing a water pump replacement.
I just did a start up on a 89 Johnson 70HP that hasn't been run since 94 and it pumped water fine. I did change the pump on that one for piece of mind but the take out looked OK.
guilty. ive been boating for 50 years, think maybe i changed 1 or 2 impellers which didnt even need to! cant explain it but they seem to never wear out. have a 25 yami, now 7-8 years, pumps like a champ. my old 150 merc lower unit has never been off. both salt and fresh water. the 1 had to replace, didnt have the hose on properly and it melted, my fault.
Pulled one out of a Yamaha a few days back and it had no veins touching the cup. And they wonder why it blew up.
Rock
I've never had a customer loose a day of boating that followed the manufacturer recommendation on WP impeller due to over heating.
I get plenty of it's over heating and they haven't done an impeller ever. And a good amount of those turns into partial engine disassembly to chase down all the pieces of the veins.
maybe the newer rubber[ china] is inferior compared to the old oem stuff. if you run thru sand alot, thats a whole other story. ran a whaler with a 40 in vietnam mekong river, we dug thru muk you wouldnt believe for 90 days, kept pumpin. quart to 6 gal back then!
What a perfect day. Just did a 3 year / 300 hour service on a 300 Yamaha (that's only just over a year old) and this was the impeller. Two blades where about to separate and it was very close to ruining someone's day. Customer had no issues, pumped hard and stayed cool. (Usually they don't look anything like this at 3 years or 300 hours)

Water pump service good. Even if impeller looks fine, drive shaft comes out of crank and can be lubed up, o-ring replaced, and an overall inspection performed.
Helps to keep your serviceable parts "serviceable"
Fasteners come off, and get corrosion control grease or sealer of choice upon reinstall.
To NOT do it regularly just means you're lucky, stupid, ignorant, or inexperienced.
If you've ever had to " wedge" a lower unit unit off with brute force from lack of maintenance, you'll be transformed into a stickler for regular service.
And as stated above....God only knows where in the cooling system foreign pieces of impeller can end up, only to cause loss of a power head down the road.
Those are some clean hands, for lower unit service LOL. GOOD you found that impeller, for sure. i guess im lucky, getting a little lazy too. just sold my suzki dfi 175 4stroke 2012, original wp. maybe someday ill regret it. or find a mechanic i can trust working on my stuff.
Kirchy, these young buck's are "factory trained technicians" , not mechanics .. ;) :D
And they all wear disposable rubber gloves ..
It usta be customers ain't allowed in the work area ... :nonod:
Now they teach em in school , when the customer wearin a suit and tie wanders around back , don't shake his hand and pat him on the back while yur hands is full of hypoid gear oil ... :)
Cooling system service every three years for all customers. Mine................every year. Cheap insurance.
I was boat shopping a couple years ago for a dive boat. I asked an owner who did there maintenance.
Response was " it's never had a problem" . I repeated my question clarifying what I meant by maintenance.
The owner looked at me like I had three heads, and repeated that " it's never had a problem". I shook my head and left.
Not too long ago I had one of "Mercurys Finest" send me a 305 two barrel Rochester. "We don't work on those"........traslation..."We don't know how to work on those".
I look at it like oil changes on cars long ago parts wer so bad you had to. Today not so much.
And I also point out that insurance is cheep and failure is expensive.
When end I did semi service we ran Napa 4077 or 5077 test on oil I forget the number. Gtx and Lucas would come back at 25k with little change maybe some viscosity loss from 4.9 to 4.7.
I have seen sporties eat them up faster buy torque and fleet you can skip a year and be ok. Dry ones also appear to lose pressure sooner.
