Why has this not been done? It just seems to me that it would be a given that somebody with the required knowledge would have done a turbo application on a Honda outboard by now.

I don't think their gearcase could hold the torque of more horsepower.
There's a guy that did it in FL. Made the local news, then went national and was covered here. I believe they have issues with engine management though. They contacted us here at Dynojet about it, but we could only offer fuel control and they wanted timing control as well.

Honda and Tohatsu are the same product in the newer large four stroke outboards. 1.86 ratio with questionable strength if you were to surface it. The clamp assy. was not something I even wanted to deal with on my toon in rough LOTO conditions but the fuel efficiency, driveability, and overall refinement was great. They were never intended for high speed applications.

Yeah i saw the stuff they did on the V6.

That is the ecm they need to be able to tune the motor and make it work. If i was to do it i would start with the 115hp honda which is the K20 motor because of all the aftermarket support and try and boost it to the 300hp range. That motor can spin really good RPM then put it on something light for a boat so it is not TQ dependent to get out on plane.
I know of one person building wingplates for the Tohatsu 250hp engines... seems like two are going on a Cat in Florida.
Oh yeah?

yet another perfect example why bobs plates are junk.
KEITH , A coworker of mine was involved in that project . I offered them the Xb02 for a test mule , but they where not interested . I don't think they understood the difference it could have made !

Honda is not interested in a high performance outboard so they more than likely asked or even paid the guys to stay away from that. If Honda wanted to I`m sure they could take the high performance outboard world by storm.
Seems like a R1 super bike engine would make a good candidate. 1 liter, 200hp and 14,000rpm. Grated a bit low on toque at 80ft lbs.
Maybe on a kneel down with a tiny prop....Doug and I get a few things out of the way we will get to it. We are on a tin boat mission right now so when those are done we will see. I've been in a lot of Honda gearcases and don't see a problem there. The metallurgy of the gears is excellent, and the propshafts are very forgiving. Plus they are basically parts binned from their automotive and the tuners have been modding those motors for 20 years.
I ran the Bob's plates on my Scarab with Monty V8's and never had an issue after 10 years. Seems like given the amount of movement, and all in one direction, I'd venture to guess that one or both of the jackplate to transom bolts on the port side were loose, broken or gone.
I could almost walk there and no thanks....
Gordon got a good vid of lighter motors 5-6yrs ago. Same issue and it was not pretty.

similar to the Yamaha nizzpro stuff well powerheads atleast. The nizzpro guys were at the local dealer Gause built dave said they never had a failure rod piston nothing. The crank and valve train on the 4.2 are over engendered which is good when your adding 175hp to a production f300.
just went through two 100hr 2019 f300 cases for an insurance claim and they are stout but I see why nizzpro makes the big shafts carriers etc. the weak points are obvious. Surprisingly similar to the sportys also.
To each their own. Looking at the video it looks like the plates are twisting laterally in their slide channels. There are bolts that hold the two side extrusions together and I can't see the plates twisting unless those aren't tight enough, not allowing the plates room to move.
Pretty sure Those are the redesigned extreme plates they were brand new on a brand new boat. Gordon assembled the engines and rigged the boat you know his attention to detail. They all move nature of their design bobs just move a lot. This is Probably why they just came out with a completely new design I have no experience with the new billet design but they obviously knew there product was lacking.
Damn no thank you
Did ya`ll notice that even though the jack plate is junk that the transom on that Rapid Craft wasn`t even scratched! Rappid Craft boats were build very strong.
So you think Bob’s ships the plate with a bolt missing or the person rigging it doesn’t tighten them? Everyone knows why they break or flop around including bobs hence 2 total redesigns (copy of torrente cough cough) :D
I’ll text Gordon to check but I’m 99% sure the extreme series flopping around in his video are rated for motors 200# heavier than the 16” 3.4 250HOs in the video.
The Bobs plates on the RJR that Gordon was running kept them from running any faster . I have a Bobs on 2 of my boats and it does move some and all the bolts are in and tight and 1 has less than 15 hours total . The only plate that anyone has run on the super stock 32s were Porta Plates and they got banned guess they were to good .
This was actually a feature I was working on with Dale Wagner, the guy that built the turbo. But COVID hit and put that on hold. :(
In true SnF winter fashion sh*t goes manure pile.
The BF 150 is a K24 engine, can produce lots of power. We were working on a project with 4Piston Racing tuning one. Made over 300 HP. Honda is incredibly inept in their marine department. They wanted to work with us but they were a little clueless and wanted more of a marketing project. It was a mistake involving them.

Other stuff going on right now, we'll get to it sooner or later. Getting around the oil sump get it all squatty is going to be a bit of a chore.
Thoughts on the seastar jackplates?
Hopefully if and when things get back to something like normal you can finish your story on the Honda/turbo project. I for one would love to read some intel on it. HP figures, How they did the dyno pulls and stuff such as that. I believe there was tons of potential with the Wagner project that they never got to.
Ive looked at this and from an engineering perspective I cant get past the heat issue.
Too much heat under the Cowl.
Superchargers are cooler
Where is this project at.
I can pick it up here in nz.
I have a 15inch platform form that will take a turbo k series
Any news on the Mclaren Honda story....heard some gossip from xcat guys
