Doug Wright is building a brand new 35 foot cat

The CNC machines are once again running and shaping the foam that will build Doug Wright's next 35 foot cat. The design has come from his winningest 32 foot cat in both OPA and SBI. Because the new hull is a Computer Aided Design (CAD), he's able to bypass the traditional build the plug-then-mold methods, by going straight to building the mold. He's able to do this because CAD drawings already have the specifications for the (female) mold. And by doing so, the design, build, and production stages are cut in half, saving Doug Sr and Jr time and cost.


The video below shows the large CNC machine cutting away the foam for the mold which will become the tooling for the new 35 foot cat.

When customers want new enhancements to the hull, all that Doug does is to go to the CAD renderings, adjust the specifications, mill a new part and the part fists perfectly in the build.


From the visible transom design cues, I see cutouts for the outboards. Possibly 400R, 400ROS?

It will be great for the guys to not have so much labor intensive finish work like the 32s require. This is big hull-

Yep, just what the world needs, another 1/2 million dollar boat............ It's cool and all that but I'd be a hell of a lot more excited about builders catering to the under $100K price point.

Where are they built? I know Sea Ray has one of those CNC machines and a lot of companies use them to make there tooling.

Their shop is located in Melbourne, FL, the large CNC machine is also in that same shop.

I am currently following only 4 boat manufacturers that I really like. I don't get paid. I just share the info I find and post here and in the "other" forums.

I do not understand why they would build such a big boat with such a small cockpit.
A boat that size should be able to sit 4 across the rear seat. Windshield looks similar to the MTI

there are only 2 seats in a Ferrari.

the 35RT is 10" wider than the 32RT, 4 across seating in the rear is available. The windshield is much wider than the 32RT as well.

I don't understand how a cnc can build a mold? For a plug i get it

Good looking solid model , can't wait to see the finished boat. This hull may work well with our new fifteen " 3.5/ 4.0 LT CRT motors .
Will it be ready for the show in february ?

Think of the plug as havimg a surface

The router knows the surface shape from the instruction set of the CAD

That same surface is the mold surface, and the router cuts that surface but instead of cutting the foam and leaving behind the plug, it would leave behind the mold


Also, the mold is done in pieces in foam. One sponson would be done first, then the second, then the tunnel. Then all three parts are put together as creating the female mold in foam. A hardener skin is applied on the foam. And the mold shape is complete

Probably will not make the show, but Rayzor have said similar ideas about your bigger motor for this cat.

Will be a great combo

Three of Matt's beast would be soooo cool. My guess is that most guys will stay with twin 400s. The cockpit is a lot bigger then the current 32- as is the rest of the boat.

I was told the turnkey weight with 400Rs is 5200 lbs

Hull target weight is 27 to 28.

Wow this is going to be an awesome build. I have been looking and waiting for a boat like this already visited a couple of factory's but this is off the charts. Man this hull with some light weight high horsepower custom outboards would open some eyes. I am definitely going to try to speak with Doug and Matthew on trying to explore this potential. Man I can't wait for this.

Curious to see how that will hold up over time, Definitely a time saver. I know that a conventional mold is built with 2-3 times the amount of Glass than a boat uses for strength. A lot of conventional molds are still popping out decent products 30+ years later.
A company like Sea Ray only uses the same tooling a few years in a row then builds new models in the same size.

Several years ago, Doug did a "top Secret" Special Forces desert attack vehicle hood for me from cad files supplied by my customer for the "part". Doug, converted them, ...skipped the "plug stage"..and milled us a Female finished mold that we could start producing parts immediately from. Saved me, my customer, a lot of time and money to skip the "plug" stage. Also allowed us to meet our cliAttachment 361760Attachment 361761ent's stupidly unrealistic dead line.Attachment 361758Attachment 361759..a week early!

Over the years...Doug has done several projects for and with me....he is a top notch guy...and light years ahead in the CNC design/build community, and he and Doug JR are light years ahead of any boat manufacturer I know as far as laminate schedules, panel deflection bracing, and epoxy resin chemical and fabric load matching. You will have NO REGRETS doing business with him.

Doug Wright's designs have always been revolutionary. This one is no different. Just incredible!

I a m still trying to understand. The actual finish surface of the mold is Foam. ? how does one get a proper Gel coat finish?

More than likely the foam will be the shell that they lay glass and eventually gel onto to make the finished mold. That's just an educated guess.
