I picked up a ruger LCP .380 about a year ago,its light,compact,accurate and very concealable, holds 6 plus 1 I love it,I think I paid like 350.00 brand new for it,heres a link to check it out........http://ruger.com/products/lcp/models.html
Might knock the paint off of it. PH
Lots of concealable pistols to be found... Personally I go for a semi-auto, and if super concealability is the primary concern then it'll be no bigger than a .40 s&w... Look at the single stack Walther PP series like said the Ruger .380 but some do consider that to be below acceptable power... Almost forgot, the Kahr 9mm/40 cal pistols are very nice, and very small but above the price you mentioned... The price you mentioned will almost certainly put you into the used gun category, but I'd also recommend getting signed up on a gun website and do lots of reading... Let Me say this, despite all the hoopla and wives tails that are told about handgun performance and how Grandpa used to blow whole batallions away with his .45 cal, this is BS and they are all woefully underpowered for immedate stopping power on a drugged up maniac...Shot placement is paramount, so finding the pistol that you shoot the best is more important than caliber... None of them will work quickly with a poor shot, and most will work fine with a solid hit... Use the best self-defense ammo and practice alot for shot placement and you'll be fine..
H&K USP 45 Compact is the only acceptable choice!
My off duty is a Kahr P9. Very concealable. 9mm and will get the job done. The PM9 is even smaller in same calibre. If your carring it for protection the odds are your confrontation is gonna be up close and personal. My opinion is there is no need for anything bigger, gun wise or calibre wise. I have carried everything off duty from a M5 PDW to an AMT Backup. If its to big and/or heavy you will find yourself caryring less and less. Again just my opinion from 35 years of carrying offduty and being the departments Range Master for 25 years.
Are you against a revolver? A 38 Special +P has a pretty good punch.
I have one of the American made 5-shot 22 Magnum palm size revolvers. You can stick it in your pocket since it is about the sized of a cell phone and if you feel threatened you just put your hand in your pocket and the person never realizes that you are pointing a gun at them, [which will keep you from losing your CC premit for showing them your concealed firearm]. If you needed to, you can fire right through your pants pocket and the magnum hollow points would ruin their day with a well placed neck shot.
This is the one I was thinking of...It has a cool clip on handle like a cell phone...Laser site available...PS this will be my first firearm...Al http://www.naaminis.com/pix/ms.jpg
I'm with Vnemous, 9mm semi auto. Many are 15 shot and 9mm is nice to shoot. And as they say while there is lead in the air there is hope. I personally would recommend a CZ, european built, amazing reliability, as fast as you can pull the trigger it will go bang.
9mm is the calibre of choice for more law enforcement agencies around the world than any other calibre.
Just my opinion based on many years pistol shooting in New Zealand and many years as range officer and controller.
Agree with Vnomous that if its big and bulky you wont carry after a while, Thats why I want a little guy! no diff than havin' a cell phone with you..Al
I do relieze its not the most powerful thing in the world but up close it should get the job done.I fulled the clip with federal 90 gr. hydra-shok hollow points to give it alittle help LOL.LCP stands for lightwieght compact pistol. No jamming issues with about 100 rounds through it so far.I used to carry the older Ruger DC 9 but it got to be a little big to conceal.I am far from an expert but just giving my experience with what I have had....Good luck.....O btw its alittle hard to get out in the middle of nowhere in this urban jungle im in over here LOL
I guess I could go to West Philly and let a few go,nobody would take notice :D:D
It's would be fine power wise as long as the weapon itself fits your preference... From a power standpoint it's probably something like a 9mm standard pressure load, but again shot placement will decide who wins or loses... You can also get Ruger's new offering of the 6-7 shot .327 Magnum in a very handy size revolver... The .327 mag is no slouch and not far off a .357 mag in power... I'll gaurantee a couple of those little fella's through the chest would way the odds in your favor significantly... Tough little round, but this will really come down to what works for your in a close personal sort of manner... If You find a weapon that your comfortable with then you'll carry it OFTEN, and that's the best kind...
You ought to see them in Jackson, MS... They are doing a pretty good job at it all by themselves. ;)
I like to roll at least 200 rounds through an auto before I call it "broken in".
Its illegal to carry Hollowpoints in New Jersey unless you are active law enforcement. Funny cause the ball ammo is gonna penitrate better than the hollowpoint. I guess the concept is a thru and thru is more survivable than the hollowpoint but than your more likely to hit an innocent bystander. I really never understood it. Maybe its just a Jersey thing. How about the rest of you states.
Here in Louisiana we can carry any commercially made ammo that will make a bad guy deader - quicker... It may not be that way forever, but so far we can..
40cal is said to be best two ways high velocity and stopping power.
Not really.....I thought that at first, then figured if I was going to pull it out, I wanted something I knew would go bang no matter what, had enough weight I could keep slinging lead on target, and enough lead that whatever I shot at wasn't going to shoot back....so I said screw it and bought a Glock 19. Put 190 rounds through it last weekend and love it!
I would go with a Kahr if you have the scratch. I carry a PM9 quite often (when I'm not wearing something that will easily conceal the Glock 19C). If you are stuck on that price you may want to look into a used Glock 26/27. The nice thing is the ammo carrying ability. They hold more rounds and can take the larger magazines if you want to carry an extra magazine with you. You may also be able to come across a Springfield XD sub-compact used or for not much more than you were looking to spend. All the guns I mentioned are very reliable. But so are little revolvers, I just find the semi-autos easier to shoot accurately and reload quickly.
Vnemous, we can carry just about any ammo we want out here (But like you, our dept issues hollow duty ammo) but if its available and legal on the federal side then its good to go. But then again, I'm in a state that allows anyone who can legally own a gun to legally conceal it. But I agree, it doesn't make sense to require ball ammo, over penetration could be an issue.
I have an XD-9 sub compact that I like. It's a little more than 400 new but you may be able to find a slightly used one for around that.
The compact or sub compact XD's, S&W M&P's, Glock 26/27, Walther, Sig, HK's, Ruger SR9c's are all nice and reliable... I recommend looking at everything..
I was just shooting my Glock 21 for semi annual qualifications and just the magazine with 13 45 cal rounds in it would be like hitting someone with three rolls of quarters if you decide to take prisoners :D
I have two 22 autos that I'm real happy with, a Walther P22 and a new Sig Mosquito 22 that I shoot the stinger ammo in in they are light weight and semi small to hide in a car. I also have a Glock 40 S&W , and an Astra 45 ..I just bought a new FN 5 7 28 but I haven't shot it year . Its a we bit pricey ($1000.00 ) as is the ammo....

I will do come research on the models you guys have mentioned...Thanks...I am a total newbie on firearms...Sounds like I be a homo if I got a 22...Al
GLOCK 26 "Baby" Glocks 9mm,
GLOCK 25 380
GLOCK 33 357
I've got a Glock 23, mid size pistol, and one day at the range a deputy let me shoot his Glock 27, compact pistol, with a mag extension and it was an easy pistol to handle and shoot, JMO. Maybe go to a gun show and handle several pistol to see what fits ya. Then find a gun store that'll let you shoot the one/s you like.
Among my 40+ guns my Glock 22 is one of my favorites. Although my 22mag Derringer is maybe the ultimate carry, it's louder than the 20mm guns from the Tincan I was on, even if I missed the noise would scare them away.:D
My favorite carry gun is a S&W Model 36 Chief Special. I load it with CCI Lawman 125gr +p 38spl, they have non reloadable aluminum cases that help keep the weight down.
My second favorite carry gun is a Beretta Tomcat 32acp loaded with Winchester Silver Tips. I carry in a wallet holster for simple yet deep concealment. I can unload the entire magazine with the gun right in the holster.
The new S&W J frame revolver in 327 Federal is a very attractive package, near 357 mag power, more capacity, plus you can practice with the less powerful H&R 32 mag.
Buy the gun thats right for its intended use, full size auto or revolver for battle (business/home defense, security work, law enforcement). Target gun for target shooting. A small to medium size gun for concealment and daily carry.
Buy a gun too large or heavy for daily carry and you will find that you are carrying it less and less. A smaller less powerful gun you have with you every day is better than a big gun left at home.
If your looking for some serious firepower check out the new Kel-Tek 22 Winchester Magnum with 30+1 capacity.

No You wouldn't, a few rounds of .22 mag into the upper torso will give a bad guy a real bad day and very most likely it will be his last day... How quickly you can access the firearm and the shot placement of the first 2-3 bullets is the whole ball of wax IMO... A "homo" bullet through the heart, lungs, or brain is far more effective that a .45 acp through the lower gut or extremity... I'm great at given dumbass analogies, let me prove it... An experienced mechanic with a mediocre tool set can do more good than a dip**** novice can with a set of Snap-On tools... Give that experienced mechanic the snap-on stuff and he can do a whole lotta good... Give the dipsmack the mediocre tools and he's gonna screw something up... It's kinda like that... The more practiced and experienced you get, the less you'll need to yield a necessary result...
