Well, the VRO was introduced 1984. Not for all models but that was the first year.
I have gone thru a lot of OMC part books from 1980 to 1984 and there is no parts, gearcases or any other signs of a counter rotation gearcase for V6 cross-flow with forward/neutral only.
I have never heard of it but maybe possible in some set up for racing.
Yes, same part book world wide.
If you look in the 1981 and 1982 parts and accessories catalog page 70 you will find it. long pn 390160 extra long 391095 also lists two propellers a 21 pitch and a 23 parts book were na in 1995 last price long $2797.70 extra long $2509.88 This does not mean you could get one. not 1982 catalog???????

I dont know much about early OMC cross-flow V-6 C/R gear cases (1980 to -84). I guess the one without reverse must have been a very hard sell. (pn 390160)
I asked Bill Grannis about early OMC cross-flow V-6 C/R gear cases (1980 to -84)
He knows OMC better than most people.
Here is his answer:
Lars
Something rings a bell about that but I don't honestly remember if it was for offshore racing or not.
Maybe OMC was first with ATV.

Sold half dozen of those lowers. Ran one on a triple 30 Scarab that won 11 of 12 races on the west coast one year. The first version had straight cut gears later was a helicol gear, first version was noisy but never broke one.

HMore UIM F1 - 2018
Late Saturday afternoon one of the three below is probably going to be the 2018 Formula 1 World Champion.
My heart is hoping for Erik Stark. He could be the first Swedish F1 Champion ever.. !!
Shaun is probably a safer pick. He is the points leader and need to finish fourth or better to be the champ but anything could happen.
Thani third picture is a big possibility also.
Stay tuned..

Here is my wild guess - 1978; Canadian Spencer Dunn driving the Pinel version of the OMC lay-down boat that Jimbo drove in 1977.
Spencer never really liked this boat and it was later converted to a regular sit-up cockpit and driven by Jim Harrison with a V6 Evinrude.
Thanks, I think your guess is correct..!!
From my FaceBook page today.

Hi guys, it my SST 100 that we run with the Victorian Outboard Club in Australia. We originally ran the 2000cc engine however due to local class rules, we built a 60 degree 1730cc engine. For it size, the 60deg is amazing and I won almost every I entered with it.
Your correct , Spencer Dunn and big Roy Knight doin' the mandatory roost inspection on warm up - LOL . Spencer performed a spectacular blow over in this boat at the Welland kilo's . Ended up smashed to pieces ( Spencer , the boat came out relatively unscathed ) with Tom Wood telling him " I told you not to try and beat me , I told you .... " as they were carrying him up the ramp in a safety stretcher . They were both very competitive with each other let alone the Mercury guys .
I remember the conversation(s) about the drivers inability to " feel " the attitude of the boat under trim . He found the " sweet ( bad ) spot in
Welland that day .
I thought that was Roy Knight. I remember Roy was usually with Sid Goddard in the early 70's then was with Spencer later on...actually I think Roy helped everyone. Very nice guy who was a fixture at most of our Sportscraft races in the 70's.
Your telling of Spencer blowing the lay-down boat over is exactly why I relayed that Spencer did not like this boat.
Tom Wood gave Spencer the "Told You So" more than once, I remember Tom giving it to Spencer at the Marathon Nationals in Magog, Quebec 1973.
HP, you and I must know each other somehow. I went to many races throughout the 70's. I raced FE in 74 and 77, then SE in 78 & 79.
Yes , I'm sure we know each other . My father , Fred Harrison , was the OMC engine machinist / fabricator who worked with Tom Wood , Murray Wight ( and many others of course ) under Jim Goodfellow ( Race division coordinator ( The " boss " ) ) .
I remember you racing against Duane Wight , Roy Hopkins , Pete and Jake Stelter and the likes . Man there's too many people to list !
I still see Duane quite often and Rob Wood ( I helped wrench for Tom and Rob in the v/8 days ) .
Your rite about Roy , He'd be the first one in the water in a situation , and wouldn't get out until all things necessary were finished .
