Only in Europe would you see boats racing with lifting tackle attached. I always kept mine under the floorboards.
Had to start carrying the lifting harness when the minimum weights went on. That made the weight of the harness part of the overall boat weight. Before that we just tried to get the boats as light as we could. Drove a few boats that were crazy light.
I agree with you on this point 100%. In the 60s and 70s there were more than a dozen classes in OPC using production motors. All of the racing I did was in front of those motors. This made for relatively "affordable" racing and high boat count at races all over the country. By the late 70s the cost factor started to drive out privateers like myself. Boat counts started dropping and there were fewer races being run.
