As far as I can remember I only met Ralph one time in Paris..in the pit for the 6 Hours. I think 1974.
Maybe I did met him one more time at the test center in Stuart..not sure if it was Ralph or Charlie..but remember the secret testing of the OMC Sea Drive was going on.

It looks like UIM let you guys run racing lower units in SE in i973? APBA required stock production lower units in all Production and Sport classes at that time. I personally have never run a single lap with a racing unit.
Back then UIM must approve an engine for the SE class. Minimum 1500 hundred outboard must be built..neutral and reverse.Quote:

By 1973 OMC motors were already dominating the E Production class in the US. I was running a 49in Mercury in that class in 72 and 73.Attachment 529170 I was not having much success running against the OMC boats in this class. In the summer of 73 Action Marine owned a little tunnel boat that I had converted from an alcohol "hydro" into an OPC boat. We took the motor from my Production boat and rigged the little tunnel for SE and took it to Nationals.Attachment 529171 We won the first heat of the finals and wound up second overall. The winning boat was also Mercury powered. The next year OMC upped the power of their 49in motors and put on a better lower unit. Mercury was never competitive in the E classes again.
Carniti 65 was the fastest engine in the UIM SE class up to 1972.. OMC made the 65SS 1973 to beat the Carniti 65.
The 65 SS was only sold in Europe and South Africa 1973 as far as I know.

The UIM SE class was by far the most popular UIM class in the early/mid seventies.

In 1986 OMC Europe did have this F1-V8 Molinari as a promotion set up mainly in Scandinavia. Kind of odd because the F1-V8 racing was moved to the USA only.. with start 1986.
If I remember correct this was part of a two year deal done 1985.
