If anyone gives a crap - As Chief Inspector at Merc's Plant 4 in the early 70's, I was responsible for Ultrasonically inspecting these weld joints - previously all we could do was break a shaft after welding for a visual examination, sometimes breaking 8-10 shafts per day. I set the limits from voids found in broken shafts; then made setup masters with drilled holes that would register the limits on the Ultrasonic scope screen. Used angled probes to play pitch and catch through the weld area.
