Granted Fuji—- but that didn’t stop them making a Quickie gearcase for big motors—— it just wasn’t a nice one.
Here we are fifty years on and they finally listened—- the number eight is a piece of art— but forty years late that’s all!

would any kind of "quickie" or speedmaster type gearcase on a big pleasure use outboard "back then", shift forward-neutral-reverse? answer is no.
OMC had them for all engines in ranges in the 80's
15hp
sst45 as shown
F3 engines
old 60's-70's v4
CCC and similar for the custom for the 2.0 ltr v6
sst100 80's v4
F1 v8
F1 v8 offshore custom shifting twin pinion
sst45 and F1v8 still made by Seaway and in stock normally for way less than any Merc box
no pleasure use large outboard installations now...or then...none...for a reason. in reality, about a dozen reasons...
Youre missing the point totally Fuji, which is not at all like you !!
There were “ Quickie” gearcases. Being used on the biggest outboard of the day—— made by Mercury, OMC likewise. These were for racing—— nothing else, but they were pug ugly—- not the beautiful hydro type gearcase at all .
Why would we want a reverse gear on a raceboat——- forward and reverse boxes were for stock outboards——- only reason either of the factories made them was to comply with UIM and APBA rules made centuries before.
theres plenty of classes within the UIM that allow run what you bring ——- capacity rules were what mattered.
Hydros never had gearbox restrictions— so they were given the O. The raceboats designation——- that’s why, even in the USA you saw RACEBOATS with the class designation letters—— ie—- OI ——- up to 1500 cc—— ON—— up to 2000cc——- OZ—— to the moon and back, totally unrestricted——- either in number or capacity ???
You could put multiple motors of unlimited capacity on any size boat——- although OMC did add codicills as to size for their F1 series!!
As I said in clear and simple language earlier—— OMC made a better looking gearbox than Mercury did! End of.!!!
Didnt mean they lasted any longer than the Mercury’s——- have heard it said many times by both factory teams that gearcases left a lot to be desired !
see…I got that blood flow'n now...to heal you up faster...lol...hows the fingy feel'n today?
I saw gene run this car a few times. It was a 3/4 Midget better known as a TQ. I think that car was Crosley powered. The track was way down south in Florida City an I think 1/8 mile around. I had a good friend who built 44in Mercury motors for a guy running at that track. I think his name was Earle Hatch.
Fuji—- I was born with royal blood—— not just flowing but pumping like a mountain spring—- healing capacity—— well you wouldn’t believe it if I told you. Faster than a speeding bullet—— In no time flat I will have grown a full new index digit. I do believe that there are folk out there who just grow fingernails ????
Tell you the results tomorrow After the unveiling!
No worries—- I could tell you the results now—— but modesty forbids.
