A brand new Merc 450R - V8 with today's technology burns 50 up to 55 gallon per hour WOT..no way my F1-V8 could do that.
450HP 4-stroke should burn around 35 gal/hr. not 55

I can’t say for sure but I believe they were production V-8 gear cases. I know they brought a lot of spares. And changed them out at fuel stops along the way.
