And this is where the 3M sponsorship began. 3M had recently developed a new style of tape and was looking for a real test of strength and endurance. The theory was that if it could hold Hot Toddy II and Red Bird together, it could hold anything together. Many, many rolls later, this product was introduced as "duct tape," but we all know the real story...If it were not for Hot ToddyII and RedBird, we may have never had "duct tape."

You remember South Florida in the early 80's

I had retired from MFD in 82--and by 84 knew it was time to 'bail out'. Keith had already moved his shop to St. Augustine and when I closed my shop, he offered to store the Bird, inside, until I could pick it up

A few months later I am lying in the Vail Hospital with a compound fracture [Tib/Fib] and I got a phone call from some guy--he had taken over Keith's shop and I need to move the boat--NOW!!

Long story short: The next phone call was from a guy that wanted to by the Bird. The boat was complete--boat--motors--trailer--

i knew it was a tough, bad decision--

I remember when you broke that leg. We went skiing at Vail with friends and called you before we left and you gave me the sad news. You said you couldn't even get up the stairs to your house.. I called Bobby R once also and he wanted me to come see him, but the weather was too bad so we passed on that..He died shortly after, but i don't remember what year.

Is that the original boat? I would sure like to find my old McCall like that.

Back in the 1969/1970 era there were two 4 pt. Sidewinder twin outboards. Kenny Baker and Roy Zapponi were the main drivers. Here is a picture that clearly shows the boat number ..... Zapponi trying to set a T class kilo record. He didn't set it for speed, but may have set it for altitude! :eek:

I am probably the only boat builder that I know who builds such a variety boats. For example, I have built inboard and outboard drag boats. I built the first outboard drag boat to ever go over 100 mph in a quarter-mile. I built the first successful tunnel boat in the world and the first ocean-racing tunnel hull. Besides Unlimiteds, Unlimited Lights and hydroplanes like the 5-Litre, I built boats in many other classes. Consequently, this allowed me the opportunity to hold many world records.
