1988 I rigged this #1 Speedcraft/Rosenudde/Evinrude V8-XP 4 liter for the famous Offshore race "Roslagsloppet".
Everything was custom built/special order. Brand new boat and the powerhead was sent to Evolution Marine in Morgan City, Louisiana for legal modifications and a Second Effort gearcase.
Perfect result in the race. Won the 4 liter V class with co-pilot Tom Eliasson.
Tom was the owner of Rosenudde and this single race coast him close to $100,000.00 in sponsorship 29 years ago.
Lots of fun and I sold the winning boat to a friend of mine.

how fast?
I don't remember exactly powerabout but close to 90 MPH race ready with a tank full of fuel / co-pilot.
This 4 liter V class had a pretty high minimum weight rule, not good for a really high top speed but good for rough conditions.
This Offshore race was over two hours long on open water. Start in Stockholm and checkered flag in Öregrund
The red X is the start in Stockholm and the black X
finish in Öregrund. Around 130 miles distans.
There was check points on the way to Öregrund and a mandatory refueling stop.

what was at the other end of that hydraulic ram?
I don't remember powerabout but this was done first by Cees van der Velden 1986 and today every F1/F2 boat have electric power steering but wires/cable.
electric assisted steering column seems to be the go now, sst45 guys are using them too
Power steering on a boat and motor that small? We used to use bungee cord steering compensators. Once you had the tension adjusted correctly you could steer one handed very easily.
This is an OMC poster that does not need a headline..:)

This is from Drammen GP, Norway 1980. Cees is talking to Serge Righi the Champion Spark Plug representative from Belgium. Champion was extremely good to boat racing back then.
