Oh yes to the audio, you and I both mate. So there I was on holiday and all I could think about is the Nova and getting it done, very frustrating, wrecked my concentration on trying to remember how to relax..........
haha youll get to relax when your on the water with her. Love the swim platform! with outboards its a rare idem as nice as yours. All the details your doing sound so great I cant wait to see how your final product looks probably not as much as you though.
something Im thinking about doing this to deep 6 the stereo and just use one of these from Bose and stow it. My buddy has one and i can not believe the sound they make!! They are out of this world for there size!! She also has a larger round one that rocks louder and clearer than 99% of marine sound systems. They play off your phone . http://www.bose.com/assets/images/sh..._iii_si_lg.jpg
Cheers Whipper. I have just purchased a new vehicle which now allows me to connect my I phone. So I have downloaded a heap of music and just love it all on a trip. Technology is just moving so quickly, the new GPS/Sounder I purchased for the Nova has now been superseded, how sad is that........ The stereo in the Nova looks pretty new so I expect I will leave it there, certainly till I get around to giving the cabin a make over. :)
Hello Neville,
How is your project and family?
Jeff P
Greetings Jeff,
the project has been progressing, albeit rather slowly. The Nova is going to the painters in two weeks time so will be nice to have an empty shed. Time to give the boat a good clean followed by the shed.
My wife is still recovering from her cancer treatment. At this stage indications are positive though only time will confirm this. I have basically given up my boat business as it was based out of town and this didn't work with my new "home" duties/requirements. We have a Montessori Pre School which my wife has run for the last 25 years. I have given it a major make over which is nearing completion, removed one building and replaced it with another three times larger. That will be completed soon then its semi retirement for me, boating and sometimes help my boy with his boat building work. That and a load of overseas travel.
Thanks for asking Jeff, I appreciate it.
Did you proceed with your boat modifications? I didn't see you post a thread on your rebuild so assumed you didn't proceed.
Regards Neville.
Glad to hear your wife is doing well Neville. I hope, and pray, she continues to improve and does not relapse. It sounds as if you have been very busy with more pressing facets of living life.
As for my boat. I pulled out the 4.3 Merc and bought a '95 Mercury 2.5 200 hp offshore. The engine was supposedly rebuilt last year, it appears to only need a good cleaning and paint job. I have designed my own aluminum bracket and sent the drawings out to fab shops in the area. The quotes were a bit pricey for me so I will be going the route you have taken. I'll be snooping around this thread, web-site and others to gather information on the best route to take. I am one of those over-analytical engineers who just have to exhaust every avenue before beginning a project. Drives my wife nuts, and me too sometimes!
I hope you and your family do well.
Jeff P
Thanks for your prayers and well wishes Jeff. Good to hear you are into your repower. I have never been a fan of Aluminium but probably only because I need someone else to manufacture it. I am like you, I like to think outside of the square and put in lots of thought before pulling the trigger. Soon I have a clients 40ft Aluminium launch going in the water, with two 275hp Verado's on the transom. First time in the water from new. Was originally going to have twin diesel but ended up going with outboards, it was never going to work with the diesels. Will be interesting to see how it performs. This client is like me and is often outside of the square.

If I can help you with your project, drop me a PM.
Regards, Neville.
Just saw this-was thinking of your thread:

Thanks for your kind comments Rob. I think this boat will be my "last hurrah" so to speak and probably my last boat that I will own, so I want it to be perfect. It needs to be beautiful, different/unique in NZ, it will be a statement and something I had always wanted to do. Even the bilges and areas inside lockers etc or certainly the areas I have worked on will have a similar level of finish to those areas which are more readily seen. From an early age I have always loved this style of boat. This project for me is not a race, yes I am keen to see it on the water but it has to be right and with other "distractions" getting in the way it has taken me longer than I would have wished.
Attachment 326149Attachment 326150 Painting is under way and the Nova is now primed ready for final sanding and top coating. I have managed to purchase two brand new old stock side cabin windows. These should arrive in around two weeks. I have also ditched the original hatch and purchased a NZ one as replacement. It sure is nice to see some more progress. :)
Wow! Looking good Nev!!
Looks really good Nev! I can't wait to see the end result!
Attachment 378740Attachment 378741Attachment 378742 I know, I know, it has been a while, life sometimes gets in the way. But to day I took delivery of a newly painted Wellcraft Nova 230 XL, finally. It sure was worth the wait, these guys are not just painters they are artists. Other than son Blair and I fairing the work we have done, the paint job it pretty much as the hull came from the manufacturer. We had a late addition of a bowsprit, I decided I needed auto anchoring. I am very, very happy with the paint, now to start rigging. :-)
Nice old boat. looks like new.
I'm on vacation this week so I spent the last couple of days reading this Entire thread. And...I'm glad I did. What an inspiration to me and my projects! With all you've been thru the last few years it's a testament to you and your family. We hope all continues to progress to your liking and that your wife is progressing positively as well.
Thankyou for your kind words and apologies for the late reply. One of the changes in our lives has been a major change in work/recreation balance. We have just got back from a 3 week ship cruise around Australia. Boat finally back in the shed awaiting rigging and I have to leave town to go cruising.
All about earning brownie points so boat time can happen. :-)
My wife is still in remission so life is good. :-)
Well, SJ, that's quite an adventure. I need to maintain a better balance, too. With that in mind I'll take a page from your playbook, so to speak...We're gonna go to the UK this fall & tour. It'll be our 40th anniversary a week from today- and the only thing she wants is to travel and make memories. So off we'll go! (Earning brownie points, too...)
Looks BEAUTIFUL Nev! She's coming along....
Work is progressing. New deck hatch and new side windows fitted. Engine and Jack Plate fitted. Starting to fit deck rails.

It looks like you're in the home stretch, Nev! The boat is looking beautiful!
Looks great!
Keep at it, little by little and you’ll get there.
Good to see you back! You’re almost there! Post pics and vids!
Thanks Marc. It will go in the water soon but still no windscreen and some hatch lids, as I can’t source any Thermo-lite sheets currently. Upholstry is only partially completed but progress is progress and to get this engine running and broken in will be awesome.
Nice ride. I have a 1980 Wellcraft Nova 250 XL with twin inboards. I do like them.
Attachment 512314 Finally in the water.
I decided to get into the engine break in.
Many thanks to this very forum and the advice received, I very carefully did a number of starts, up to temperature then shut down for 24 hours. I have Wisco forged pistons and wanted to give the engine the very best opportunity to live.
I am now at a point where I can take the engine up to 6000 rpm before reducing rpm back to the 5000 rpm mark. Best speed seen so far is 56mph with 22 inch prop.
For the next run I will have fitted a 23 Rev 4. I am keen to lose some cavitation and expect to see the speed continue to climb.
Time to post some updates!
Time for some updates. Engine almost broken in. Can run up to max rpm but no sustained max rpm.
Max speed to date is 58mph.
Still to do, Engine timing. Through hull water pickup for outboard. New kits for trim and tilt rams. New Thermolite windscreen frame almost complete. Son Blair has made an awesome job of the windscreen frame. Only paint and glass to come.

Boat looks really good!
I especially like that you kept the teak on the windshield.
Old school school!
Greetings mate. The teak capping was offered as an option and an option which I always liked, however my boat didn’t come with the teak so we decided to add it. In addition it also added strength and rigidity to our composite window frame.
We have added other teak capping etc including the teak veneer on the boarding platform.
So really a mix of both new and old but endeavouring to retain the old school look and feel.
I put stringers in a customers Nova that had the teak trim.
I used to sell Celebrity’s in ‘89 and they were just transitioning away from teak to plastic trim.
As a cuddy guy, I thought their 21’ - 23’s in that era, w/the teak trim, we’re some of the prettiest, most functional cuddies of all time.
I would always point out the “classic looks” of the teak (left over boats) to my customers who would then buy a new Celebrity w/no teak!
Id still take one w/a big block and a Bravo.
Your 8 looks perfect on that boat!
