Yamaha 130 V4 Project Build.

Im putting some faith in this can taking the time to do all the filler with epoxy. Because of the extra welding I had more filler work to do and didnt want to go too thick with the Bondo glass I used last time thinking it would crack so Im using PC7 like I did on my old nosecone. Im going to do a little moe blending this time and had to build up on top of the motor mount pocket where it got ground down leaving a big gap between the mid and the motor mount cover. Figured the epoxy would be better to build up a good surface to mate to the cover.

Theres no sanding this stuff by hand but its worth it the extra effort imo. This is the second coat and real close to final. Im sure Ill have to skim coat it one more time to be nearly perfect.

Ive got those parts on my bench beside the v4 I'm building...it's not going to happen anytime soon but it looks way easier than getting the horizontal front to fit.

i also had dreams of doing this conversion on my 70 race motor...dreams...

Do you think they'll be a time when the hull becomes the limiting factor?

After all that welding did you check the machined surfaces
for square and parallel.? imo way more important than what
it looks like.

The next thing to do would be just raise the exhaust ports a little and let it spin. I have at least 10hp left in cutting the tuner and raising the ports would be big jump on top end. They are still stock height now. The only way this boat is going much faster is y turning a smaller prop to higher rpm's.

I talked to Karl about stopping by with it yesterday. He said he would check it for me like he did the other day. Ill get it by for a quick check before I paint it. If it needs work then we will deal with that somehow.

They are the stock Yamaha 115 port height. I believe Gordon said when he looked it up, the 115 had a higher port height than the 130 but I am not positive. Thats why we left it alone in that regard and he just widened them plus the finger porting. I polished the exhaust ports and chest just to keep carbon from sticking.

You can see in the pics the little relief notch is still there full size.

That is a tiny relief compared to the early 150 ProV

I think Ray Neidecker had said the 225 Special was the port map to have.

I expect that would be the 220 special, it would be interesting to learn if the ports are different than the Excel.
If I am correct the main difference between the 220 and 225 is the change to horizontal intake.

Per Ray, the porting was better on the SPL.... I remember Ray saying to run an excel front on a SPL block and you would have the best combo. Of course with SPL heads as well...


The world lost a good one when he passed...... as a matter of fact this thread is somewhat of a tribute to Ray's enthusiasm for helping others in this sport.

With the parts out there now a special with OX66 front half might be a nice combination. The horizontal still has uneven cylinder fill that the symmetry of the OX66 intake should cure.

Amen!!!! I really enjoyed my talks with Ray.

Pretty happy with the way this looks. I blended in the ridge that runs up the center of the back of the mid so its smooth using epoxy. I also did more blending over the welds and into the motor mount pockets this time. Looks more finished IMO.
