That would be interesting to know...back in the early 70's I ran a 13' Hustler with an 80 Merc and I ran a 2 blade chopper .....that set up ran 64mph. Ran a cleaver on my tunnel but didn't know they had thru hub cleavers for the V boats at that time.

I never ran an XS 49. Does it have low water pick-ups? I was always able to go as high as the props needed without water pick-up problems on the standard gear case. That being said, often the only gauge I would run in the boat was the water pressure gauge. In a race the speedo didn't matter and just added drag and I didn't worry about revs. You just turned it what ever it took.

When I first ran my SE Seebold/Merc 650XS I had an 18p 3-blade thru-the-hub cleaver just like the one in the picture of this Checkmate. It was a pretty good prop with a little 'work' done to it. Pretty much everyone who were racing the 650XS were using the 18p 3-blade thru-the-hub cleaver. BUT I had to be different. I wanted something that as far as I was concerned nobody else had. I met Jim Caldwell at a race here in Canada and he had a 19p 3-blade over-the-hub cleaver that I tried and liked so I bought it and a 20p 3-blade over-the-hub cleaver that he had as well. I could turn the 19p at about 7500rpm and the 20p about 150/200 rpm less. The 20p did not accelerate as well but was maybe 1 to 2 mph faster once you got going. Only trouble with the over-the hubs was in sloppy water they could blow-out pretty bad. As well we were using aviation fuel and mixing at about 18:1 (same as a Twister).
