X 2. Very nice bit of kit. My engine tech is going to be so impressed.........:D
Thought I had better resurrect this thread and get this boat finished. I have my life more on an even keel now so a final push to completion for the Nova. Yesterday I started the teak veneer for the boarding platform. I will post up some pics along the way so you guys can see how it is done. Gives a nice result and nothing like using real Teak timber.
My apologies for the delays.......
Pictures would be great! :p....I hope that all is well with you and your family my friend!
good to hear nevil,go get um..................

Frank, thanks for posting up those "old" photo's, I had forgotten what great photo's they are. Kinda looking a lot different than as she is now, just languishing in the shed. What a pretty boat, her day will come again.
Got some time in today, starting on the Teak veneer on the boarding platform. So the process is that first I fitted and glued Teak on the vertical surface around the outside of the boarding platform. This is then followed by the Teak boarder, the first sections of veneer which go right around the outside of the platform. Accurate cutting with a good saw is critical. So as the photo's show we now have a complete border cut and fitted around the platform. During the week I hope to get this glued down so next weekend we can look to fitting the slats. I have included a couple of other photo's to bring us up to date. They show the section of transom under the boarding platform and the dash area.

And the rest.

So as can be seen things are moving along. Any questions fire away. Thanks for looking, Nev.
Coming along very nicely, looks great... Funny how things turn out to take much longer and become a lot more work then ever expected when it comes to boat redo's....:D
Also nice touch on the teak work for the platform!
Thanks man. With super light go fasts the Teak would only add unnecessary weight, it is something we have done a lot of on larger boats, just love the way Teak looks though. I always knew this would be a fairly big project, hadn't intended having to do the dash, mid bulk heads and screen along with the rest at the first hit out but it needed doing so added it to the get go list. Further down the track I will do the cabin...... I've got to say that we build boats a lot different to the way this one has been built, even given that it is a mass produced mid 80's boat. So it is hard to not modify to the standards you would normally expect yourself. As long as it doesn't become a chore......
We had another good day today (Sunday), cut and fitted most of the teak slats for the boarding platform, unfortunately ran out of time to get them glued in. Still making progress.......
Neville, your craftsmanship is absolutely amazing! That boat is going to be a head turner!
Thank you sir, high praise indeed.
Perhaps now is a good time to share a little information with you'all. You may have wondered during my ramblings when I seem to be flipping from I to we during my descriptions of various sections of the rebuild. The we is in the form of one of my sons, Blair, who has been helping me with parts of this build. Initially just when I needed a second pair of hands but then the build started to get into his blood and now he helps more often than not. Blair owns Express Marine Rotorua and is a very good boat builder working in my (our) home town of Rotorua. He is just a shy old Kiwi boy but when next taking some photo's I will see if I can manage to get him in one.
He is a VERY good boat builder and it is just great having him work on this project with me. For one so young (25 years old) he has a ton of experience from high tech carbon fibre round the world race yachts, to turn of the century, very old school timber launches. How cool is it sharing the same vocation and passion with one's son........
My intention had always been for this boat to be something very special and quite different. A head turner, yes it will certainly be that. I will probably have the only V8 Evinrude in regular use certainly in the central North Island and possibly in all of the North Island and one of only a very few through the whole of New Zealand.
So attention to detail is everything and the build will take as long as it takes. We are trying to commit to working every Sunday on the Nova, so that will certainly move it along. :)
It must be a great feeling having your son enjoy the same passions as you and for him do such high quality work as well. Working on this project together must be a great joy!...Attention to detail indeed!!! It truelly shows!!
I'm looking forward to a video of that MONSTER V-8 in action! Keep up the good work!!
Cheers Marc, father and son working together, yep it doesn't get much better.:)
An update from last Sunday. All the Teak has now been glued in place. When gluing Teak or any other oily wood with Epoxy it is important to thoroughly clean the side of the timber to be glued with epoxy thinners just prior to applying glue to the timber. The Teak slats are 50mm wide with a 5mm rebate down one edge. You will see that we needed to space the 5mm rebate out to 5.8mm using a .8mm packer added to each vertical section. This was done to take up the odd space which remained, so that the centre slat was of similar size to the rest of the slats and the rebates were also all of similar size. Hope that makes sense.
Son Blair is the handsome brute in the photo's, well someone had to handle the technical stuff ie the camera........

Attachment 302110 As always clean up is essential. When the glue is dry use a small sharp chisel to remove any excess glue which has squeezed up into the rebate.
This coming Sunday we will prime the rebates and then fill with Simmons Caulking compound. This will be left to mature for two weeks then a final sand and all will be revealed.
It's looking good! Put that sucker in the water!...Sorry, got carried away. Keep up the good work!
Attachment 303219Boarding platform completed, now to fair the transom from platform to hull/deck join.
That is a nice touch Nev
Nev, that looks absolutely amazing!
Looking good. Keep up the great work... 'Giday Mate'
Nev, that looks absolutely amazing! Thank you Marc, I am pleased to see you are keeping an eye on progress. As you are aware we have the next project on the board but work doesn't start till the Nova has hit the water....... We need to breath some life into the second V8.:D
Looking good. Keep up the great work... 'Giday Mate'. Gidday mate right back to you Jolly. Thanks for the positive comment. I love your ride, very nice rig. What power?
Twin 250 Yammi's, It rides great, 92mph or so top speed................... CU
Mr Joe,
New to screamandfly.com and to this thread. I am considering converting my stern drive to an outboard and stumbled across your thread.
I have three comments for you:
1. I absolutely admire your perseverance! Very few people would have stuck with a project for this period of time (3 years) and retain the attention to quality you have exhibited.
2. Which brings me to the second point: the attention to quality and workmanship are very impressive. I am quite interested to see the outcome of the project.
3. Thirdly, hopefully this is not inappropriate, I hope your wife is doing well and with you still.
Regards,
Jeff P
Greetings from New Zealand Jeff and welcome to Scream & Fly. Great bunch of boys lurk here and plenty of information and help for when you get into your project.
1. Thank you for your kind comments, boat building for me is a passion particularly the innovation/design aspects. Old Kiwi saying, "do it once, do it right".
2. Thank you and so am I. Getting closer.
3. Not inappropriate at all, still with me, just completed her final dose of Chemo, fingers crossed and praying for a good outcome, it has been a long journey and got in the way of the Nova rebuild...... Thank you for your well wishes and regards.
On completion I will purchase a "Go Pro" camera and will post lots of pics, footage and information on it's success or not. Even with the HP I have I don't expect it to be a rocket ship but if it is too slow I may consider adding a pad to it. My goal speed is 70mph.
Good luck with your project, just go for it.
Neville.
How's the progress Nev? Any new pics? :D
Still progressing Marc, had a good few hours on Saturday. The next pic will be when I have had the gun out and the dash area and seating have been primed. I am keen to get it out of the shed and give it a good wash and vacuum out the inside. The two Teak doors/hatches which are trademark Wellcraft and fit under the rear seat have been joined by a third which Blair has built. This third one is a vented cover to allow breathing to the battery compartment and will fit between the two hatches. I sanded all three and oiled them the other night. I am pleased with the outcome.

I selected one of the stainless steel engine brackets for the side steering and took it over to my stainless guy for polishing. He tells me it will be like a mirror when he returns it.
WOW!!!!!! is all i have to say, cant wait to see more.
They look great! I'm glad to see that things are moving forward...You're making me want to pick up another project boat....If I only had the time.
Joe,
I'm new on this thread and I'm not a go fast boater just a fisherman. Your build here is amazing, very nice work!
Been planning on doing the IO to outboard conversion on my 24 SR and was going with a bracket until I saw your thread. For me this looks to be the best solution as I will be rebuilding transom, stringers basically everything.
How thick are these stringers? I will be going with twin Honda 115's so the pod will probably be a little wider then yours. Was thinking of laminating two 3/4" marine ply together to make the stringers, is that overkill? Also I may use three stringers with one down the middle, any thoughts?
Thank you for sharing this great build with the rest of the boating community.
D
Greetings Chief,
sorry for late reply, I have been overseas on holiday, just got back yesterday. Thank you for your kind words on my workmanship. If you can you send me a PM with engine weight, shaft length and an external photo of your existing transom and I will do some research.
Regards,
SJ.
