The Pacific Offshore Powerboat Racing Association is one of the oldest offshore powerboat racing organization in the world. POPRA was incorporated in 1966 by the late Bob Nordskog,
Back in the late 1980's, I listened in on a driver's meeting in Marina Del Rey. And at that gathering before the California offshore race, it was easy to see who had the major clout in the room. It was a Nordskog show.

The Horsepower Leadership Decade – Having shocked the competition in 1976 with the introduction of the industry's horsepower leading 200hp V6, Johnson followed with the 175hp V6 in 1977. The company continued their horsepower leadership with the introduction of the 235HP V6 in 1978, designed for big-water boats, and a 150hp V6 targeted to serious bass fisherman. Notably, the 200hp V6 launched in 1976, weighed only half as much per horsepower produced and developed nearly twice as much thrust per cubic-inch as the original V4 introduced in 1958.

Photo taken in "Stiltsville" south of Key Biscayne. Only about 6 or 7 of those places left. When owners die the feds take down the houses. There was a famous nightclub out there called "The Quarter Deck Club". Went there once in the 60s. Quite an adventure. Don't remember much about that night but I was told I had a great time.

Which Hat Do You Wear? – Back in 1974, Johnson & Evinrude were more focused on competing with each other than they were with Mercury. I was working the Johnson exhibit at the Boston Boat Show when a guy walked in and asked directions to the Evinrude exhibit. After directing him, I said - you realize you can see the same motor right here. No thanks, he said, I believe Evinrude is a better motor than Johnson. Really, I said. Do you want to know the actual difference? Ok, he said reluctantly. So I told him, the motors are assembled in a Johnson building built in 1926. During assembly the motors travel around on an overhead conveyor line. It’s an old building, and now and then, the conveyor will lurch and one falls off and hits the floor. We pick it up, paint it blue and call an Evinrude. “Smart ass!!,” he responded. Apparently he didn’t actually want to know the difference.

It's interesting to see his cable steering set up with the double bulkhead and cable drum mounted on the end of the steering shaft. Those combing pulleys are huge. Great idea! Less rolling resistance when turning the wheel. When we went to reinforced cockpits, I was only too glad to get instrumentation back into a dashboard where it belonged. Never was happy having a tachometer spin around with the steering wheel.Quote:
