what an engine, I think later ones were advertised as 425hp
Years after it first appeared we see the Charlie Strang twin pinion full shift box again on the Offshore F1 based V8

A very formidable team no matter what race they entered or what equipment they ran. They really had the Parker race figured out. They won it it 1975 covering just over 700 miles in 7 hours! Even with 5 pit stops, they had an astounding average of over 100 mph running a Merc T3. That year they did something that had never been done at Parker, lead from the first lap to the finish. In 1976 they picked up right where they left off and led the first third of the race in another Merc T3 before an electrical gremlin took them out. Then they come back the next year with OMC power and win the thing again. However, this time I think it was Lou Burnette's KT that had to suffer a problem in the last hour for them to take the lead and ultimately the win.

The Winner..Barry Woods in his #35 Molinari/Evinrude F1-V8 above.
Today July 15 is the date life really changes for me..The big win in Lappeenranta, Finland 1973..it's 44 years ago today..!!
Lots of action at Saimaa Strand (beach) here is the full story:
After a few years in the sport, a big possibility opened up in the winter 1972/73. Hans Holmén who worked for Evinrude, Sweden called me and said that Huzells and Evinrude has picked me and one other Swede to get the new Evinrude 65 SS ( for free) that was designed to be a winner in the SE class.
One condition, I have to buy a new SE Cat from Italy. There was two choices, Abbate or Clerici and I picked Clerici without really a good reason.
We where late to order, but Franco Clerici promise to have the boat ready in June that summer, and that was OK because OMC was late with the new Evinrude 65 SS also.
I friend of mine (Indian) was his nickname lent me and older Schultze cat and I used my stock Evinrude 65 hp. At the Swedish Championship in Torsby, Varmland and ended up fifth.
Me and my dad Roland cranked up the large Coffee delivery truck (Hanomag 45) and headed to Cremona, Italy with a big bag full of Lire (Italian Cash) to pick up the new very good looking Clerici cat.
Back to Sweden to install the brand new Evinrude 65 SS, that had just arrived.
There was one big problem, this engine was using left hand props, and there was not many around. I found one 2 blade prop used for the Mercury BP’s, but not very fast at testing.
The big race of the year was the European Championship in Lappeenranta Finland and OMC’s Racing boss Jim Wagner had a lay over in Stockholm, on his way to Finland with Roger Jenkins #56 Clerici/Evinrude SS boat. I got a chance to test factory driver Roger Jenkins propellers in Sweden and my boat was flying.
This was a 3 blade cleaver left hand rotation and Jim Wagner promise me that if I showed up in Finland he was going to let me use Rogers spare prop.
Me, Holmen and friend Curre took the ferry to Finland and when we arrived at the race there was 45 boats with Mercury, Carniti, Konigs, Evinrude and Johnson engines, but now Jenkins refused to let me borrow any of his props.
I was very disappointed and was walking around in the pit, when I ran in to Tor Smith Ingebrittsen from Norway. He had an older home built boat, and he showed me his prop that looked like the one Jenkins used. We made a deal and exchanged props with a handshake.
There was no time for testing and when they dropped the green flag I was flying through the field and after a few laps I lead the race and pulled away. I won the heat with half a lap, and everybody went crazy regarding my prop. Many drivers offered my new friend from Norway lots of money for his prop, that he lent me but he was cool and said it belongs to Lars. Next heat the Italian drivers was trying to run me over in the start, and later pushed me up on one of the turning buoys and I was disqualified and had some damage to the boat but we fixed that overnight. I do not remember the third heat, but I had to win the last one (fourth), and I did.
I was now declared the winner and the new 1973 European Champion, and Jim Wagner was forced to come over to my boat and congratulate me. Lars and his friends had the biggest after race party they have ever seen in Lappeenranta. (Roger Jenkins left early for the airport)
This was the beginning of my professional boat racing carrier and my Outboard Business success.
Thanks to everybody helping me.

Roger Jenkins #56 white Clerici/Evinrude SS used in Finland 1973. He got his Evinrude SS before me so he could race in Bristol with the same boat.
1976 was the year when OMC came out with the new midsection-gearcase for the OE-Mod 50 class.
I raced a factory owned Burgess with a Johnson Stinger RS in Paris same year. Dont remember why Paul Kalb forced me to use a Johnson RS cowling instead of an Evinrude CC.

..or me Mark75..:)
This was my last race for OMC when Paul Kalb was running OMC racing in Europe. It was also the same time when OMC kicked most of the local owned distributors out and started OMC Sweden, Germany, France, Norway, Finland etc..OMC kept the local distributors in Spain and Italy.
I know Huzells the Swedish Evinrude distributor was very upset with OMC cutting them out and I think that's why Paul Kalb put a Johnson cowling on the race boat. Bo my friend and co-pilot was backed by AGB..the distributor for Johnson in Sweden.
This was one of the first large mistakes OMC did..and the start of the downturn for OMC..many dealers around Europe was very upset with OMC for doing this. OMC was not thinking clearly..Huzells did not turn over and died..instead they went to Japan and got the rights to sell Suzuki outboards and motorcycles in Sweden starting Jan. 1 1977. AGB got Mariner in Sweden and similar things happened in most European country's.
Major screw up from OMC.
OMC Sweden must start from scratch and Huzells and AGB already had a very good relationship with all the Swedish dealers. Most dealers signed up to be Suzuki and Mariner dealers and OMC Sweden must beg them to sign up to be Johnson and Evinrude dealers.
1977 was also the year when Renato Molinari started to race for OMC. That was good and bad..
The bad thing was the European racing headquarter was split between Belgium and Como.
Como got more attention from Waukegan than Belgium.

OMC winning in the SD class 1978.
Yes..the SD class was dominated by Archimedes Penta and when I was back with OMC 1978 I promised OMC Sweden to make an effort to put Evinrude in the winners circle.
My first SD race was a enormous success..winning the Stockholm Grand Prix 1978..
I grabbed the overall win…Well the race was one hour and most SE/OE boats broke down and you have to finish to win.

Did OMC have any luck in SD in the USA. I last ran the class in 1975 then a year in G Production then ran out money.
I don't think OMC put any effort in to racing with the 2 cylinder looper. My effort was mostly for fun. I hired the best 2 stroke tuner in Sweden but we could never get any better power out of the engine. The best engine for the UIM SD class was the Mariner 60 2 cyl.
I started racing Mercury 44in motors in 1964 and stopped in 75. Started when they were an E motor and won my only Nationals in that class with a 44in 50. When they reclassified them into D Class I got one of the 74 motors rigged my old E boat for D class and ran for a couple more yearsAttachment 380747
SST-45 is a different story and was based on the production 50/60 2 cylinder powerhead from 1980. No OMC modifications was done the the powerhead just stock.
What made the SST-45 unique was the midsection/gear case but the powerhead was a production. I dont believe the 70HP.. maybe 60HP a very good day.
My SD effort was based on the 55 from 1978. Not a good engine and was replaced with another "bad" powerhead 1979.
We tried the new stock Evinrude 60 2 cyl. 1980 when it was released from OMC in the UIM SD class but the Mariner 60 was much faster. (Also 2 cyl).
Bertil Wik was racing the Mariner 60 in the UIM SD class and he won every SD class race for years. He got the nick name "Super Bertil" from that era.
The SST-45 is using the powerhead from the 50/60 model year 1980 (picture). Its a better powerhead than 1978/79 but still not very powerful.
The best way to tell a 78/79 from the 1980 model year is the 1980 have one bolt for the lift eye..the older two bolts.
Worthless info but a fact.:)
Evinrude and SST-45 was the start for F1 Shaun Torrente ..!!
http://svera.se/blogg/evinrude-and-s...haun-torrente/
it was Racer that told me, he has had dozens on his dyno all 70hp.
it has more comp than stock plus the almost dry custom megaphone has to count for something
The 45 block from 1986 is different than the original as its a permamold or lost foam with cast in exhaust.
Well the 1986 production 60HP is a down rated 3 cylinder and the 1986 production 2 cylinder is only 40/50 HP.
The 1980 2 cyl block is more or less the same all the way up. First year with better sleeves and exhaust.
The fist picture is the 1979 55 HP 2 cyl, with the old style exhaust manifold. The second picture is the 1980 50/60HP 2 cyl, and you can see the old style manifold is replaced with what you call lost foam with cast in exhaust.
First year for this and a very reliable two cylinder engine but not a lot of horsepower.
This was a big seller in Sweden and OMC replaced hundreds of 1979 powerheads with the new style (Warranty) More or less every 55-79 blow up.
SST-45 was popular in Sweden also in the mid nighties. Here is Tobias Tejby racing. I was with Tobias in Cypress Gardens,FL 1995 for the SST-45 World Championship race.
If I remember right was Duke Waldrop from OMC the officer of the day.

What were the specs for UIM SD class?
Don't remember 100% but it use to be max 700 cc production homologated engines. (Archimedes Penta was more or less the only engine for the class)
Production gearcases with reverse. I think it was 1978 UIM raised to max cc to 750 so the new Evinrude and Mariner could be used. A minimum length and a minimum seating area was also in the rules for all S classes at that time.
I recall Burt Ross and his son Bobby running SD in Florida in the late 70's with OMC's. They ran "Bunkies" that I believe they kneeled in. Bobby blew over in Key West and was stung badly by jellyfish awaiting rescue. Don't have any pics of the SD's, but this was Burt's SE Bunky...

Here is some Scandinavian UIM SD race boats from 1976/77
before UIM raised the cc to 750.
Cats and V-bottoms was used. The #251 is under a record run 68 MPH.
Here is a mix of OMC drivers in the SD class 1975.
This is when the max cc was 700 and the Evinrude/Johnson 50 was just under 700 cc.
Not enough power to run with the 3 cyl Archimedes Penta.
One exception Christian Mollgaard won a big race 1975 with a Evinrude 50 and that was the start for people to use OMC in the class.
Luigi Baggioli was also racing in the F1-V8 series 1981/82.
If I remember right he use the same boat seen here with a V8.
I think this is a bigger bore of the 2.448 liter cross-flow.
Just over 2.6 liter.
Early 1983 I purchased Baggiolis V8.

My first Evinrude F1-V8 was a Johnson..here is the short story..!!
Back in the early eighties I was pushing OMC Europe really hard to get in to the F1-V8 racing. OMC’s George Lamy was in charge for finding sponsorship and late 1982 I signed Aspen Racing Jackets from Rouen, France as my main sponsor for the 1983 season.
I was racing F3 during the 1982 season and become a good friend of Luigi Baggioli from Como, Italy.
Luigi was racing F1-V8 in his red #99 Velden/Johnson V8 1982 and told me he was retiring after the season.
He offered me his Johnson V8 for a very good deal after the race season.
I started up my pickup truck in Sweden and drove to Baggioli’s place in Como, Italy and purchased his slightly used powerhouse.
OMC gave me a new Evinrude cowling and a new spare powerhead.
So my #8 Burgess/Aspen/Evinrude was really a Johnson V8 from start, but I turned it in to an Evinrude and enjoyed the F1-V8 series 1983.
Thanks Luigi Baggioli, it was a pleasure doing outboard business with you.
The red arrow first picture is Baggioli and his red #99 Velden/Johnson. The second picture I did found today. Last picture is my #8 Burgess/Aspen/and now Evinrude V8..
EDIT: November 5 2016
This is pretty incredible..I just got this from Luigi Baggioli thanks to FaceBook…

Correct
I saw one run at the Modified Nats in Kingston Tenn when it won D or E mod hydro.
First and only tunnel I'd seen succeed against the three points.
Was part of the motivation for my failed attempt for a tunnel in Mod 20 (Yamato 80s) hydro.
I was also at the Stock/Mod Nats in Dayton Ohio when they showed us the first 45 SS motors.
Id have bought one if I wasn't already burnt out and broke.
They rigged two of them on D Mod hydros and ran an exhibition race.
They 45s gave the stacker Mercs a half straightaway head start.
The 45s caught them going into turn one and passed them all before exiting the turn!
They were bad ass! I was only bummed that they only ran them on 100lb heavier, sit down tunnel boats.
I was rewarded a few yrs later, at same race, in a turn boat, turn one for Formula E hydro.
An epic battle w/a 45 on an old school cab over hydro against a Merc on a current era pickle fork.
The 45 would destroy the Merc on the straight but couldn't make it turn.
He barrel rolled the 45 right in front of us!
